No you haven't. You've only given your assertions. I've given the definitions, none of which say what you are claiming. Absolute power is only the ability to do what you want and make other do what you want. If it is not exercised, there is no obedience happening.

Incorrect. It's submission to authority whenever that authority is USED. Kim Jong Un has absolute authority in North Korea. If you went there tomorrow and he was nice as could be. Made no threats. Didn't tell you that you had to do or not do things and just let you wander around until you...

I don't know what you are talking about. What pithy sayings? Nobody said must not be used. As I said, I end up having to use it once every 3-4 years. That doesn't mean that it happens often or that the players have to be obedient to something that isn't being used 99.x% of the time, giving...

No he didn't. "The DM and the rules often call for an ability check when a creature attempts something other than an attack that has a chance of meaningful failure. When the outcome is uncertain and narratively interesting, the dice determine the result." Was in his post. But in any case...

The runic language inside Moria was dwarvish, which Gimli could easily read. It's not is this were some ancient dwarvish language. Languages in Middle Earth didn't change over time and Moria was only abandoned for like 10-12 generations. The only reason Gandalf needed to be the guide was that...

Sorta. Most spells say things like Fireball here. "The fire spreads around corners. It ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried." I don't see the same for dragon breath, though I really didn't look very hard.

Yeah. You don't veto something like that. You simply narrate the arrow going up a few hundred feet and dropping down to stick in the dirt.

I'm just not seeing what being an expert on deception has to do with what runes in a dungeon are most likely to be. Yes, that was why it was a joke with the :p and everything. ;)

In my opinion, yes. The DM just makes the PC an NPC or has the former PC wander off and retire or whatever, and the game continues on. Even if all the players leave, the DM can get 5 new players and have 5 new NPCs or retirees. Then the game continues on.

Yeah. We have understood that from the beginning. ;) We're saying that the DM is constrained by what the mechanics tell us and what the prior narrative has been up until that point. If the PC is climbing a cliff face, I can't narrate him falling down a building wall. If the cliff is super...

Obedience is submission to authority when that person is using the authority on you. Your assertion that absolute authority passively causes everyone to be obedient to you at all times is where you go wrong.

The DM isn't reality in that manner. The DM is reality in that they play the game universe and everything in it. That doesn't mean that everything the DM says is true and correct. Can get. Not gets. Can get. If they don't force the issue......................it's not an issue. You keep...

While there might be one or two people here who feel that way, the vast majority of those on my side of this issue don't believe that at all. We're fine with players bringing things up briefly during the game, and then if it's not resolved to their satisfaction during the game, having a more...

It seems to me that there really isn't any limitation other than good faith behavior on the part of the player. Especially since being an expert on deception to achieve your goals seems to be sufficient to know what runes in a dungeon are. Yeah. We'd have to allow the guy to expertly deceive...

I see a difference between influence and authority. At work my boss has authority over me. If he tells me to do something I pretty much have to do it if I want to keep my job. At home my wife has no authority over me, but I tend to do what she aske because of those social dynamics, behaviors...
