It's not a cult thing. The Bob idea wouldn't work, because you have to have complete faith in the divine concept. Essentially, it's for things like having Taoism in D&D. A religious concept without a god being involved.
Trying to have faith in Bob the fighter as a religious figure to the...
That's not a denial of access. That's a challenge to be overcome! (Turns to the rest of the group and begins planning how to kill the current wielder) :p
Huh. I mentioned upthread that I had a few 1e DMs cap exp like this. Now I know where they got it from!
The all caps portion seems to me to be consistent with the first portion. The all caps reads to me like the thief with 1200xp doesn't have enough for 2nd level yet, so if he gets 800 more...
I disagree. The super powers of PCs and NPCs is not one that radiates complete divinity like gods do. Nor are the PCs and NPCs immortal and pretty much unkillable unless you are also a god.
I don't know of any pantheon where a mortal can just become one of the gods. Generally it takes the...
People used to worship it as a god. Then we realized it wasn't. That said, if you walked outside tomorrow and the sun took human form before your eyes and descended to speak with you without blinding you when you looked at, healed a loved one of her incurable disease, had an aura of divinity...
1e didn't work that way if you were rolling treasure randomly. Even low level creatures had lairs with treasure that could include magic items. There was only one chart for armor, so you could theoretically find +5 plate at 1st level. Also, the 1e DMG didn't have chain mail higher than +3...
Why can't my 200 year old PC elf who did that do those things? You get to pick ages, and sometimes even start at higher level.
Not every game is against having PC villains.
I just took a quick peek at some of it. It looks quick and easy, and it would be fun to play. However, given what I've seen of Daggerheart, I'd much rather play that than Shadowdark if given the opportunity.
