Removing X ability score minimum to cast spells

I feel vindicated that this was dropped in 5E. That is all.

Planescape Looking for sources on how alignments phsyically function as substances

The only thing I can think of are Soul Coins from Descent to Avernus, and perhaps Larva, Dretch and Manes, which are fashioned from evil souls or used as a sort of currency. I seem to recall some of the gears of Mechanus being forged of souls; that might be referenced somewhere within Planes of...

D&D General Simple Rules for a Dark Sun Game

I think I'd only offer one of the three stat increases - +2 Str, +2 Dex*, +2 Con per character. Though +2 Dex seems iffy, I'd be more inclined to offer +2 Wis (Being wise enough, or having the willpower to stay alive). Since this is a one-shot, the long term Defiling effects need to either be...

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

I don't think anyone's mentioned Savage Worlds yet. It's byline is Fast. Furious. Fun. It's a generic system, with your abilities rated by die type - d4, d6, d8, d10, d12. To succeed in an action, you have to beat a target number of 4. There's certainly a lot more to it, but that's the core...

Diablo RPG Kickstarter signup is live

I think in your case, it might be better just to buy the big lore books. I think someone in the other thread mentioned there's two in existence right now. I know I've gone that route for other properties - buying the Game of Thrones and Dark Crystal "world books" instead of the RPG games.

Diablo RPG Kickstarter signup is live

Oh my, I still have my 2E/3E Diablo books (and starter set), but I'd love to get my hands on updated rules.

    What's Your Price Limit?

@Thomas Shey - but that's not all the costs, and it's this other portion that people don't think about. You have costs for writing, editing, and at least art. You have to divide those costs against how many you believe will sell. I think I've put in at least a hundred hours of writing into...

dumb premise for a game - Medieval Aliens

Lots of movies and stories to drawn on for these ideas - Stargate Cowboys and Aliens Predator Elfquest Masters of the Universe Krull Doctor Who Being just some of the ones that come to mind.

    What's Your Price Limit?

I see a lot of this as well. Whoever is going to run the game buys a copy, the other players use that copy until they've had enough time with the system to want to explore it deeper for themselves. A lot just never buy a copy, and in my case as GM I've actually bought copies for long-time...

    What's Your Price Limit?

I'm right there with you - game sounds fabulous, but is just sitting on the shelf mocking me. Then when v2 comes out, I just have to hang my head in shame....and then buy it.

    What's Your Price Limit?

Pretty much this, though I try to keep PDFs under $15 as I'm generally buying the hardcover at the same time (I really appreciate free included PDFs). I used to wonder why my dad would get so upset over prices when the prices seemed reasonable to me, and now having gone from my first DMG cost...

Maps Feature on D&D Beyond Becomes Free to Use

Maps going free is great. That message is bizarre and rings of "corporate said we had to say this" sort of wording. The D&D team is working far ahead on projects and I wonder if the 2024 books didn't hit the marks they expected (being based on popularity over a year old) and realization is...

What are your thoughts on roll-under/roll-high mechanics?

Choose a direction, and be consistent with it. I've played several games where you want to roll under (usually to get as close to the target number as you can, like playing blackjack). I've played other where you want to roll as high as you can. Old D&D uses a mix, and while I never had an...

D&D General Requesting Advice on FR Pantheon

You could make it that each god has a yin/yang aspect of duality - most folk promote/favor/worship the "good" form, and fear/appease the negative aspect hoping to keep it at bay, perhaps calling down the "bad" side on individuals they wish to curse. The "alternate" names are simply titles...

    D&D 5E (2024) Simplifying Dual Wielding in 5e-2024

On monsters, a lot of creatures that have the "claws" attack make one attack roll but the damage is combined into (usually) a single die. For example, a Lion does 1d6 (+3) with its single-rolled claws attack, representing two 1d3 individual claws rolled into one attack (if you roll a 1 for...

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I was about 10, in 1980, when I was introduced to D&D. My first exposure to Tolkien was The Hobbit Rankin Bass version - I can't remember exactly when, but well before I was in 7th grade (I got to be the voice of Smaug for the school play that year :) ). To this day, I have never completely...

D&D General Requesting Advice on FR Pantheon

You could also roll Gruumsh into an aspect of Talos. I'd keep Oghma as he covers one of the adventuring classes and is patron of Candlekeep, if I remember correctly.

D&D General Cthulhu by Torchlight Brings Mythos To D&D

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to agree with others. Until there is a printed version (and hopefully PDF), this is a pass for me. Hopefully, they're using the Beyond version to gauge interest and/or collect errata/faq from customers before committing to a printed version.

D&D General Mike Mearls' blog post about RPG generations

I can agree with Mearls on 1st and possibly 2nd Gen, but the problem is that D&D stayed locked into what it was until 2000 while the rest of the RPG community took a hard left away from TSR design. He's too narrowly focused on D&D, which has been struggling to keep up with the direction just...
