OSR Minimalist Paladin and Ranger rules for B/X aka Old School Essentials

I don't think these are a bad way to do a humanocentric world - I tend to do similar things with the "elf" class - though I should finish that write up... Paladins The main thing is that I've never really thought the "Dwarf" class was especially distinct from fighter beyond some minutia in...

More Aubrey and Martuin movies... "1805 - Napoleon is master of Europe. Only the British fleet stands before him. Oceans are now battlefields."

OSR Does anybody know anything about this OSR adventure: Gods of the Forbidden North?

Lesser known? Pathfinder and CoC pretty much win every year. They don't do much highlighting. I'm not laughing. You weren't just asking questions or poking fun in a friendly way. You clearly wanted to support this work, stop criticism of it, and to shame someone who doesn't think it sounds...

OSR Does anybody know anything about this OSR adventure: Gods of the Forbidden North?

That's an awful lot of religious gooblygook for an RPG book that doesn't seem to have any impact on play. Secondly it sounds fundamentally uninteresting - afraid to be interesting even. Sure there's Crystal Dragon Jesus and HIS followers fight with demon god of the abortion ladies ... but do...

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

As per the past 10 years or so my next game will use 1974 OD&D without Greyhawk and with a set of house rules. I don't know that this is even D&D anymore though. Certainly won't be using the rest of the game either (monsters/treasure etc..) just the mechanical framework.

D&D General Big Ideas and Concepts Pre 5E

This is a good observation - except I think it undervalues a lot of "what you can do", especially in early editions. When one looks purely at the mechanics of combat (or exploration here - skills being mentioned) one is looking from a contemporary position that focuses on mechanical character...

D&D General Big Ideas and Concepts Pre 5E

I find it a bit telling that this thread is most talking about mechanics... specifically combat mechanics and character builds. This strikes me as a very particular framework for looking at older editions of D&D, and one with a very contemporary inflection. The fundamental difference for me...

OSR Does anybody know anything about this OSR adventure: Gods of the Forbidden North?

Supporting Elon Musk's meme nonsense ... That's not about Gygax. Stop justifying the worst values with appeals to nostalgia. I don't care if someone does it cause they like ugly electric trucks or think Musk is one of the world's best Diablo players. Even three years ago that guy was spouting...

OD&D Earliest use of BECMI-style trade dress?

The mid/late 1982 - 1991 angular logo here was introduced at some point in mid-late 1982. It's not on some of the notable module covers and other products (video games, game books, monster cards, modules etc.) published in 1982, but it's on others from later in the year. I'd guess Tomb of the...

TSR 5 Fun Facts about the 1991 D&D Black Boxed Set

I wonder if one of the reasons that the Black Box/1070 is so much less well know these days is that it doesn't scan to PDF well. It's "toyetic" aspect of cards and such seems very cool, but also it's easier to lose bits and piece I suspect. Of course I bet the main reason it's less well known...

ENnies To Ban Generative AI From 2025

Don't much care about the Ennies (even if I have one? Sorta? I think?), but I am very happy to see this change.

    AD&D 2E Jakandor

The characterization of 90's design, especially the sort of indy design as being heavy on rules bloat and specificity. A trend towards GURPS like systems one might say.

    AD&D 2E Jakandor

Thanks for finding this thing. I took a look at the three books, and while some of the basic ideas seem interesting enough as a sword & sorcery/pulp fantasy style setting there was also a lot ... and a lot of it seemed pretty mediocre and it has that 2E/3E quality of just being too much...

D&D General Who was your first character, and do you still play them?

In 1984 I rolled up a fighter named Charlie. He was grey oozed to death in the Caves of Chaos. RIP Charlie the Level 2 Fighter.

D&D General Renamed Thread: "The Illusion of Agency"

I largely agree with this though I'd add some caveats: 1st Caveat. This is dependent on system and play style. If one is playing a style of game that's largely about tactical combat and character building where non-combat actions need to be pushed through quickly and are a lesser/smaller part...

    OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

I'm sure the map will be pretty, Greg hires talented artists. I do wonder if it will be a copy of the Wilderness Survival Map? My understanding is that his past work has all been placed on this 1970's map, a popular conceit in the early and mid OSR. For example I believe Dwimmermount was also...
