Wizards of the Coast Releases Day 1 Errata for Monster Manual

Some smaller game publishers do just that, release a digital document to crowdsurfing backers, ask for feedback, then go to print. And guest what? They STILL have errors. Every time. Probably a lot less than they would have had otherwise, but you will never escape printing errors and errata...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

No. No, it's not. Sigh. Cultural appropriation isn't a binary thing, always okay or always wrong. Taking something from another culture that is sacred and using it out of context or in an elf game is the bad kind of cultural appropriation. Like the use of phylactery for a lich box. Knowing...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Yes, really. Even the illustration you chose is similar in concept. A box with mystical or sacred writing within. Yes, the problem is the word (or name) and how it evolved to more closely resemble the Jewish phylactery over time. It's both. No need to blame anyone, Gygax or otherwise. Like so...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Oh come on. Mythical creatures and weapons are a bit different from religious paraphernalia. Phylactery is a word and concept from Jewish religion and it's easy enough to remove it from the game. I can't believe the push back from some folks on this.

Wizards of the Coast Releases Day 1 Errata for Monster Manual

Adorable. You feel the Day 1 errata means an overly rushed product and is unacceptable . . . if I am understanding you correctly. I feel that is a ridiculous take.

Wizards of the Coast Releases Day 1 Errata for Monster Manual

No, I really don't see it that way. Were the 2024 books rushed? Probably. Big projects like this often are. Is Day 1 errata a problem? Of any sort? No. Just no. Total rate of errors? What are you even talking about? That's a small list of minor errors in the OP. Will it grow? Undoubtedly...

Wizards of the Coast Releases Day 1 Errata for Monster Manual

Sigh. Most of the responses so far are rich. What book goes to print without errata? None. From no publisher. Ever. The current list is small. Impressively small. Will it grow? Probably. So? I get so frustrated with how toxic fandom can be sometimes.

I loved that book! Opened up a whole new sub-genre for me, "cozy fantasy". The prequel is pretty good too!

Worlds of Design: A Pretty High Price

Tabletop games used to be a niche market, even so-called "family" games like Monopoly. Most board, card, and RPG games were inexpensively produced and more affordable. I don't miss those times. Today, tabletop gaming is a more accepted part of society and valued more than it was in the past...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

If your orc warrior and genasi warrior that use the exact same stat block are "vanilla" . . . it's not the stat block that is the problem. Sure, it's cool to spice up the stat block a bit by maybe adding levitate to the genasi, but the real flavor should come from the narrative. IMO. For...

D&D General Chris Perkins and Stan! - previous D&D edition thoughts

Oh good lord. Perkins isn't an edition warrior for stating his opinion on the game. The opinion of somebody who has worked on every edition of the game. Sheesh. Relax, pour a cup of coffee or something.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

The 2024 books aren't perfect in how they portray orcs (and other fantasy beings) as people, rather than as monsters. But they have made significant improvements over the past D&D rules, including the 2014 rules. They are no longer portrayed as inherently savage, bestial, and evil. In the...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Orcs are people. They can be good, evil, or like most of us, somewhere in between. Kittens? Kittens are monsters. You shouldn't slay them on site, you should RUN.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Volo, the character, is definitely an unreliable narrator. But Volo's Guide to Monsters is not an unreliable source for the 2014 portrayal of orcs in the game. Volo's commentary is just flavor.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

The claim is perhaps "overstated" if you insist on the literalness of "every single orc in the game is evil and must be killed". But no one is claiming that. Even if they don't word their posts perfectly or clearly. You know better. The claim is, "The portrayal of orcs in D&D, up to and...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

In the 2014 Monster Manual. Orcs are portrayed as evil, savage monsters. While it doesn't literally say, "and that means you can slaughter them without remorse." That is the obvious implication. Please.

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

Please. Check the 2014 Monster Manual on how orcs are described. The shift from always-evil monsters to characters capable of holding any alignment and behavior certainly has been evolving for decades. But the problem is hardly solved and done.
