Elven Trance, Spell Scrolls, Grappling & More: New Sage Advice

So what? From the DMG pg 4: And as a referee, the DM interprets the rules and decides when to abide by them and when to change them. ...and a bit further down the page... The D&D rules help you and the other players have a good time, but the rules aren't in charge. You're the DM, and you...

D&D 5E (2014) Short Rests: How many does your group get/take between long rests, on average?

16 short rests between each long rest - My characters have yet to get out of bed.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone actually track rations?

Then the next time they go to use them you tell them that they apparently left them on the ground somewhere...why let them get away with being lazy? I don't let players shirk the tiny responsibility of keeping track of their own stuff. As a DM it's pretty easy for me to remember when someone...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells Without Attack Rolls: Can they Critically Hit?

I would like to point out that DMG pg 242 does allow for the possibility of degrees of failure including critical failures and successes with regard to both ability checks and saving throws.

Elven Trance, Spell Scrolls, Grappling & More: New Sage Advice

Thanks, that was exactly the intent of my post. Yes DM's are human and can make mistakes, and I always welcome players pointing out something I may have overlooked, but if a DM chooses to interpret a rule differently than you, then he cannot, by definition, be wrong.

D&D 5E (2014) Narrational advice needed! Time travel, PCs without a past and ... character background?

Two words: parallel world. Characters can have families that both are and aren't theirs at the same time. You can even have the option of creepy duplicates. Don't tell the players what is going on at first... Muwahahaha

Elven Trance, Spell Scrolls, Grappling & More: New Sage Advice

Not true at all. The rules don't cover billions of possibilities, and never will. Rulings fill the gaps. That is the way the game is intended to work. ALL...and I do mean ALL of the rules are subject to DM interpretation and override. Try thinking of clever ways for your charcter to accomplish...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

Maybe. I'm still open to tweaking it. In fact I'm planning to revamp the whole rest/sleep/exhaustion thing at some nebulous point in the future.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do you play 5e? What game did you come from?

    OD&D, AD&D 1st and 2nd. Never played 3rd, 4th or Pathfinder.

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

I wasn't clear. The exhaustion isn't cumulative. If you sleep in armor you get a single level of exhaustion if you are currently at zero, i.e. it doesn't make an already exhausted character more exhausted. Continuing to sleep in armor doesn't inflict additional levels. Edit: Sleeping in armor...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone actually track rations?

We track rations, water, and other consumables, as well as encumbrance. Darkvision in my games is disrupted by bright light, just as first edition infravision was. Probably even fewer people track water than rations. Most characters seem to only carry a single water skin which is only good for...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

Point taken about tropes. Minor nit...in this case it isn't about the fit or weight distribution, it's about density. Full plate is 65 pounds of dense metal. I don't know anyone who could tread water carrying that much. My rule of thumb is if you are carrying 20 + 10 * STR bonus pounds or more...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

*facepalm* This has gotten so far off topic it's ridiculous. It started from a tangential remark about how a character in heavy armor might still sometimes need a decent dexterity. Who said it was hidden? I explicitly said I don't use save or die traps placed to catch unwary characters. That...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

But the system isn't intended to be comprehensive, nor could it ever be. Reading the swimming rules in the PHB gives me the distinct impression that little thought was put into them beyond the movement of characters on a grid, unfortunately. One has to extrapolate from there to provide some...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

Not silly at all. I've done a lot of camping including sleeping 'in the rough' and it can be comfortable enough. Sleeping in any kind of armor would be uncomfortable in the extreme. There's a reason it takes so long to put on and take off - straps, buckles, plates, etc. Any character trying it...

    D&D 5E (2014) How many fans want a 5E Warlord?

I likely wouldn't object to someone who insisted they wanted to play a Warlord, but I don't like them. It's not the healing thing that seems to bother everyone else that gets me though. It's the fact that their main reason to exist is to direct and inspire people. That may work in a wargaming...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

Yes, this is another that I use. I rule that you cannot have restful sleep in any armor. It makes characters really think about where they take those long rests. A surprise visit by some wandering monsters could be a disaster: Don't worry, the paladin will join the battle in...let's see... only...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

I could not disagree with this more strongly. It can certainly make narrative sense for a character to die...what you mean is it doesn't fit your pre-determined narrative. Again, I've found players would rather play a game with a narrative where there is a real chance of failure than one in...

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

A chance not to drown when he falls out of a boat? He'll be out of his armor in 1 minute, vs. 5 for the guy in heavy. I could probably come up with other stuff given enough time.

Does Medium Armor Need a Buff?

There's no hyperbole here. Are you really suggesting that characters should never find themselves in a save or die situation? At high levels would you ever let an NPC spellcaster have access to PowerWord Kill (no save)? Plenty of things can kill characters, and surprisingly often they have only...
