D&D 5E (2014) Homebrewed Warlock Patron: The Paradox

Bump away! :) Actually, alarm raised an eyebrow more than longstrider. If you want to remove alarm, perhaps purify food and water with the idea of reversing rot, etc.? Lesser and greater restoration also seem a bit out of place, but I think I know what you are going for with them, so I didn't...

No, it isn't. My PC gains a level and so I gain hit points. The DM cannot stop me gaining hit points when my character gains a level. That is not DM fiat. That is setting up the encounter. Anyway, as always, not going to argue with you about it further. You think what you want and so will I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Randomness and D&D

There is in the DMG (p.239): This is the part of 5E that in a strange way, I both love and hate... Every time you get in your car to drive someplace, there is a very significant consequence to failure... you could get in an accident and die or kill someone else. There are also lesser...

Notice I said "approach" perfection, not reach it. But depending on the task, the degree of failure should simply be the minimal roll. In the case of 1 in 20, 5% is ridiculous IMO for something that is routine and very easy. At least with 3d6, the minimal roll is just about 0.5%, which is better...

Much better. Fortunately for me, I wasn't the only one "gunning for it" -- I was just lucky enough to get in the final blow. :) Yep, but someone would have had to vote IT out before Tempest could have won... In which case Knowledge probably would have won, and that I would have upvoted. ;) But...

    D&D 5E (2014) Randomness and D&D

Well, I feel my position is putting the appropriate amount of value on skill compared to the die size of d20. AD&D didn't really have "contested rolls" IIRC, but it has been a while... In many respects, it handled things very differently than the d20 system. I never said a "newbie", I said...

Correct, I said... Proficiency means you have played, learned, done whatever and are competent. You can "play chess" by learning the moves and just using INT modifier (no "proficiency" for games: chess). Proficiency is more than that, but not really a lot more since the base bonus is +2. You...

D&D 5E (2014) How many dragons do we need?

I think it has been at that point for some time. I only use the base 10 "true dragons" as dragons. Although WotC gave the others the "dragon" creature type, I don't consider them dragons except for Faerie Dragons maybe, but more Fey than Dragon IMO.

The threat of those dangers is part of what made the game exciting. When you faced a creature or spell with SoD effect or level draining, you knew it was a serious threat and had to act/plan accordingly. Too much in 5E I see players just blithely running into the fray because there are no such...
