Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

That would be interesting. If everyone has flight, then there's parity between the PCs, so no issues there. And since everyone has flight, the challenges would certainly have to be approached differently. I could see a potential problem with low level published adventures, but otherwise I...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Eh, if you want to be the only PC flying when the baddies have bows? you do you!

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I think that gets to the heart of the issue. Some players really do believe that if it's official content they should get to use it. I've never had that issue, but, supposedly, it exists.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Compromise? in D&D! Now there's a novel concept! I had an aarakocra moon druid PC in one of my low level games a while back. I'm extremely permissive as to what I allow, but that was bit of a test! No bad issues though, worked out fine.

Aarakocra (a flying race) are canon Greyhawk, they are also a playable 5e race. If the DM is running 5e, in Greyhawk, but states, no flying PCs? Flying PCs, at low level, for a DM that's new, or simply doesn't want to deal with the extra element CAN be an issue.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I think it depends entirely on what "bad DM," means in that context. If the DM is bad because they don't apply the rules properly due to ignorance, or they are not good at scene framing but willing to learn, issues like that - sure a good set of rules and good players will likely help a lot...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

One thing I've learned is, much of the time, players don't think about these situations in nearly the same way the DM does or is expecting them too. What seems obvious to the DM is often opaque to the players, information transfer is far from perfect. Meaning, if the players need to know the...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I certainly agree the framing could have been more overt. It's a possible opportunity to realize that things that seem completely obvious to the GM are far from obvious to the players.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

In the original post with the example, the poster expressly states that the PCs understood they were not to anger/upset/annoy the wood elves. While the elves were not physically brought in, the stakes were set here, most players should know that blowing away an innocent bird for laughs would...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

If the DM frames the scenarios properly, none of the resting scenarios should be retroactive. The players should know the stakes and the likely consequence of their decisions. The empty treasure room? The players should absolutely know others are gunning for the treasure. They should know...

    D&D 5E (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

We started with flanking but abandoned it fairly quickly. There were so many ways to get advantage already that this just seemed too much. Am a bit surprised that they didn't keep it as the optional rule it was - not exactly a lot of space taken up by it. I wonder if they kept the optional...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

If there are never any negative consequences for Resting whenever they want, then, of course, the group will rest whenever they want. Even more so if the "consequences" are actually positive. If the effect of resting whenever they want is being better prepared for encounters, being better able...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

The first thing I though of, this is the kind of thing some people do in a Computer RPG - just because they can and think it's amusing. From the reaction you described here, seems pretty similar. He did it because he could and thought it would be amusing. Is this a continuing game? Or was it a...

D&D 5E (2014) One shot for new dm

I ran Lost mines for 2 new players, (very contrary to my usual practice) I did throw in an NPC cleric as party support. It worked well. The first couple fights are surprisingly challenging for new players - which is not necessarily a bad thing. If you're willing to go just a bit higher in...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Interesting, I've DMd both through 20th level. I'm fine playing both at any level. But while I gladly DM high level 5E, I would only DM mid/high level 3.5 with extreme reluctance. It started to become a hair pulling unfun experience for me.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

If I recall correctly, Pathfinder did, very briefly, overtake D&D (4e) in sales. But then 5e came out and that was that For me personally, 5e fixed many of the issues I had with 3e, while PF exasperated them (and PF2 went in the exact opposite direction of my preferences). I suspect I wasn't...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

One reason I'm not so sure about that - 5e is REALLY popular with the younger crowd, couple examples (that blew my mind as an older gamer): When my son was in elementary school, the D&D club was so popular that 1) they needed to find a bigger room than they had initially assigned 2) There had...

D&D 5E (2024) PHB 2024 Is Hilariously Broken. Most OP of All Time?

Though they are far from equal, the 5e classes are in much better parity with each other than the 3e/3.5 classes. The 2024 classes, from what I've seen so far, are in even better parity with each other. IMO this is great. As for the whole "broken" angle. Broken, to me, means badly enough...

D&D 5E (2024) PHB 2024 Is Hilariously Broken. Most OP of All Time?

Since Nystul's magic aura requires a willing target, you'd also need one heck of a persuasion check (I'd definitely make the player at least explain just HOW they're trying to convince the powerful baddie!) or something like charm monster to kick it off. Suggestion might work, love to see the...

D&D 5E (2024) PHB 2024 Is Hilariously Broken. Most OP of All Time?

It's WAY too early to tell. But from what I've seen so far, they look to be effective without being ridiculous - pretty much where you want them to be.
