New Warhammer Old World TTRPG Announced

Pfft, the only TRUE Emperor has four arms... Yeah, it's mostly been the Horus Heresy stuff that's kept me interested in the setting in recent years. I don't play the miniatures game but i read the novels, but I've been leaving a lot of the 'current day' stuff unread - and that's quite aside...

New Warhammer Old World TTRPG Announced

Funny how perspectives differ. I've lost a lot of my love for the setting over the past few years, with the whole primaris thing and the return of the loyalist Primarchs. Dreadful lore written for nakedly venal commercial purposes. 40k is so big and sprawling that there's still stuff I enjoy...

Here They Are! Your 10 Most Anticipated TTRPGs For 2024!

Yeah, it’s a fascinating and incredibly busy era of history. Quite aside from the Austenian and Napoleonic stuff, you’ve got 1812, you’ve got the British Industrial Revolution and all the associated upheavals like enclosures and the Luddite movement, the highland clearances are still going on...

Here They Are! Your 10 Most Anticipated TTRPGs For 2024!

Reaching the audience is the key, as you say. There's been a few attempts in that direction. Good Society is probably the most successful, and that's entirely designed around telling Austenian stories. It's still very niche as a seller though - they had to run a second kickstarter a couple...

DDAL Polymorph and drop monster into a pickle jar.

To be honest though, if I’ve got the means to punch a 100 foot long hole in something, I’m going to use it directly on the monster rather than playing complicated games with polymorph!

D&D General Random House Announces Three New Licensed Dungeons & Dragons Books

I’m pretty sure he’s written young adult books before, so he’s likely not completely locked in to hard-R grimdark stuff.

D&D General Random House Announces Three New Licensed Dungeons & Dragons Books

He can legitimately write. I loved the Shadow Campaigns books, even though the final one in the series didn't quite stick the landing. I'll be buying this book cos of his name attached to it, for what it's worth.

WotC Roll For Combat: Hasbro Downgraded. Toys Rotting on the Shelves

Honestly, the impression I get is that pretty much all the ubiquity of the Heroes of the Lance is in the nostalgia banks of people my age (coughmidfortiescough) and older. I’ve just started up a Dragonlance campaign, running it for a group assembled from a Facebook ‘looking for group’ post...

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

I've seen that done many times in 3rd party products. Kobold Press does a bit of it, for instance. I suppose the main exploit case is using multiple Counterspells in one round and completely shut down an encounter with magic-heavy enemies. But often i've seen restrictions on what you can use...

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

The hammer of koscitzche (?) is a cool concept though. If it was me, I'd just ask my DM if I could take a custom variant of Repelling Blast that worked with my pact blade instead of my Eldritch Blast.

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

Yeah, I was recently considering something like this for my paladin's 12th level feat. Maybe pick up Riposte or Brace to try to get a bit more damage output, another chance to smite in a round is a pretty big deal. Obviously as a paladin you can only take one of superior technique/martial...

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

A fighting style and a feat seems to me like a huge investment to be able to use two maneuvers per short rest.

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

The extraordinarily limited nature of Superior Technique (and the Martial Adept feat) baffle me, I have to admit. Magic Adept gives you two cantrips and a 1st level spell, there's fighting styles that give you two cantrips (and all cantrips scale as you gain levels, and are of unlimited use) -...

D&D 5E (2014) Are some Fighting Styles worthless, and how could they be fixed?

Blindfighting is pretty handy for a drow or tiefling who can drop Darkness on themselves. Hell, it's even useful for a drow in bright sunlight - if they're sufficiently close to the enemy, they can just close their eyes and remove the Sunlight Sensitivity penalty.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dex barbarian

I'm not allowing reckless attack or rage damage with Dex, after some thought. I think he's more likely to go elk or eagle style, for extra mobility and because they fit the character better than bear. I haven't played with this guy before, but so far he's shown a willingness to bypass some of...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragons that can polymorph into humanoids...

Silvara was the dragon i was referring to in the above quote. In the Chronicles novels she sticks to the silver-haired female wood elf form, firstly because it's a long-established role that she was trying to maintain, and later because the guy she fell in love with fell in love with her in...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragons that can polymorph into humanoids...

I was reading an old Dragonlance novel recently in which a dragon was experimenting with what humanoid forms she could change into. She could certainly choose some details of her humanoid appearance, but was frustrated because she could not become less than conventionally attractive, even when...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dex barbarian

For what it's worth, we did session zero yesterday. The inspiration is clearly a Warhammer wardancer. After reading all the input in this thread (thanks everyone), I was ok with the player choosing to go dex-based. Str 12, Dex 18, two short swords. He went with eladrin rather than wood elf...

TSR The Dreams in Gary's Basement

That's not quite true, at least for those portions of Williams' tenure at TSR which are post-Gary. The narrative of the events leading up to Gary's ouster from TSR certainly are largely based on he-said-she-didn't-say, but that's not the be-all and end-all of Williams' tenure. There's been...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Pact of the Talisman--What Am I Missing?

It's a cool idea. Especially appropriate for a fiend pact, where the patron would EXPECT his warlock to tempt people with little bits of power in exchange for favours. The implementation is very very weak though.
