WotC Roll 4 Combat: Hasbro/WotC was offered 20 million for D&D at the nadir of 4e.

And then you inevitably become primarily a video game company rather than a tabletop game company, simply because making high-quality modern video games is such a personnel-heavy, slow, and expensive business compared to making RPGs (or Warhammer, for instance). If you don't, you end up having...

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

At the time of the Hasbro acquisition, Kickstarter didn't even exist of course. And that business strategy has been a mixed blessing for WW/Onyx Path. You can produce some great products without being beholden to spome corporate overlord that sees you as a line item on a balance sheet, but its...

Evil Genius Games Sues Netflix Over 'Rebel Moon' Roleplaying Game

Nah, sorry for the confusion. I was referring to the likely polarised reception of the film given the guy who’s making it. The corporate scumbaggery leading up to the lawsuit would have been a nightmare surprise for anyone.

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

I've unfortunately lost the link, but wasn't there an online article a while ago basically doing a Ben Riggs on Adkinson and WotC? It sounded like he had few alternatives but to sell, he was still running the thing like a 'bunch of gaming buddies' organisation even quite late in the piece, and...

Dragonlance What spell school would Raistlin be in 5E?

That's a Dark Gift from VRGtR, in my book. Or at least that's how I'm going to handle it in my game...

Evil Genius Games Sues Netflix Over 'Rebel Moon' Roleplaying Game

There'll be people who are upvoting this film on Rotten Tomatoes because it's Zach Snyder making it, there'll be people downvoting it on Rotten Tomatoes because it's Zach Snyder making it. Very few people have neutral view of Zach Snyder. Speaking for myself, I'm very unlikely to even bother...

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

For what it’s worth, the guy responsible for the whole mess with the Weis/Hickman lawsuit (and other debacles such as the whiplash-inducing queer erasure in the MtG War of the Spark novels) actually WAS let go from WotC, a long time ago, immediately after the dragonlance lawsuit settled I...

WotC Roll 4 Combat: Hasbro/WotC was offered 20 million for D&D at the nadir of 4e.

Yeah, that was my reaction too. I mean, that offer may well have been made, but an offer being made and it being seriously considered by Hasbro are two different things. I mean, I could offer Hasbro $1.50 for d&d tomorrow, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they’d pay me the slightest attention.

D&D 5E (2014) When did you last buy a WotC D&D5e product? (not a third party or DM Guild)

I bought Planescape. Dragonlance was the most recent before that. Seriously though, I’m a whale. I’ve probably bought (or backed) a hardcover a month since I got back into d&d in a big way during covid lockdowns, and that’s not counting the pdfs. If you’re the biggest name in the industry, the...

D&D General Two new D&D novels coming from Penguin Random House: "The Fallbacks: Bound for Ruin" (FR) and "Spelljammer: Memory's Wake"

Huh, I didn’t spot that Django Wexler was writing the Spelljammer one, thanks @Henadic Theologian . That’s gone from a curiosity to a probably-buy to me, I really enjoyed his Shadow Battalions series, even though the last book didn’t quite stick the landing.

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

If they care. The last time i was laid off, it was because the medium,-sized Australian company i worked for had been bought out by a much larger American competitor, who was sick of our specialised Australian product outselling their generically international product in Australia, and decided...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Kor Hadar, Gary’s Appendix, Death Send, and more

Kor Hadar has cancelled with four days to go, claiming that the number of backers is insufficient to produce the book properly, despite reaching about 120% of their funding goals. Were they assuming they'd need to get to 200% or 300% funded to actually produce the product? Or maybe they...

WotC WotC Cancels 5 Video Games

It's a bit of a mixed bag. If your live service game is a success, then it's great because you've got a reliable income stream from subscriptions and micropayments etc for a long time, rather than just the sugar hit of initial sales which then tail off. If it doesn't work, then it's a bigger...

    D&D 5E (2014) Iron Kingdoms 5e

I hadn't read that anywhere, but if that's the intent, it's dumb intent, because every other non-underpowered class can stock up on mekanical items too. Also, it's actually harder for gun mages to buff themselves with items, because one of their attunement slots is automatically tied up by...

    D&D 5E (2014) Iron Kingdoms 5e

I haven't played, but i've done a lot of reading of them and put together some sample characters. For beginner players, I'd steer clear of Warcaster and Warlock classes. The Iron Kingdoms Warlock in particular is possibly the most complicated class I've seen in any 5e book. Lots of...

D&D General Drawbacks of a World with BG3 in it

On the upside, my local 'Looking for Group' facebook page is absolutely chock-a-block with first timers saying 'I've never played before but after playing BG3 I want to give an in-person game a try' Honestly, while I won't start DMing my first game in a post-BG3 world til January so i can't...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I work largely in the financial/banking sector. There’s a guy with my name two states away who is an undischarged bankrupt who’s involved in all sorts of property shenanigans. This tends to cause all sorts of problems when I start a new job and have to go through a probity and background check...

D&D 5E (2014) Quests From The Infinite Staircase Coming July 2024

Of the non-green ones: Princes of the Apocalypse has Temple of Elemental Evil and Return To... pretty much covered, I don't think WotC will re-do those ones. Queen of the Spiders and City of the Spider Queen might be quietly left alone, given how hard WotC are trying to branch out with their...

D&D 5E (2014) Quests From The Infinite Staircase Coming July 2024

If they want short adventures of any sort, planar or non-planar, from any time more recent than 2e, then they'll almost have to delve into Dungeon. (Thanks @Parmandur, i didn't realise that about the publication rights). There hasn't been official 32-page adventure modules published for D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) Quests From The Infinite Staircase Coming July 2024

So - uninformed and wild speculation about what modules they’ll be redoing for this? If Yawning Portal sets any precedent, they’ll look for a selection of classic adventures with name recognition, from all eras and edition of D&D, but probably with a bit of a lean towards more generic fantasy...
