    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I don’t think you can get rid of it entirely; it’d simply be jettisoning too much well known history and useful story hooks from the game. Fantasy of all sorts is rife with magic maguffins and players expect them to be a part of the game. I also don’t think people are especially clamoring for...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I think D&D has presented enough faces to show it’s not trying to be any one thing and even then, it’s changed over those 50 years.

Pinning down what is D&D’s fantasy is a Rorschach test.

“Of course the Chinese mix everything up. Look at what they have to work with. There's Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoist alchemy and sorcery. We take what we want and leave the rest. Just like your salad bar.” — Egg Shen, Big Trouble In Little China

No. It’s no more Steampunk than it is Swords and Sorcery than it is Medieval Fantasy.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

So, my current way of thinking is that, if everything is brought down to dollars and cents, and growth rates and all that jazz, people could make the argument that the 5e system could just keep on going until eventually sales start to flatten out for whatever reason they do. But I also know that...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I honestly don't know whether the existence and relative success of those other games will make the pressure to change lower or higher.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I'm thinking that by the time 2030 rolls around, we'll have had 16 years of largely the same system, and people will start itching for new mechanics and something more than just a refresh. So, not due to a lack of success, but more of a need to try something new as an impetus.

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

We went from 3e to 3.5 in about 3 to 4 years, and then it was 5 years after that when 4e came out, so we do know they can move quickly when they feel they need to. I'm thinking seven to eight's probably the right time frame, too, with planning to start in about 5 years.

So...what do people think would be the likely time frame for a next edition? 3 years? 5 years? 10 or Longer?

I think some of these greats live on in current fantasy as inspirations and then become part of the basis for new fantasy. To me, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser are the epitome of the “screw up heroes” that you still see in stuff like the D&D movie today. Conan was a loner who wandered from land to...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

It just seems to me that D&D is a very specific kind of fantasy that changes from version to version - one where a base, non-subclassed fighter has no overtly magical abilities but nearly every subclass adds in magical or supernatural abilities - and yet we can still argue about whether such a...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

For all I know, he could be paid a ton of money. My problem with all of this (gestures wildly to almost all industry discourse) is that people get so wrapped up in trying to figure out the money aspect of the industry but almost all of it is based on hearsay, supposition, and very incomplete...

Her worst crime was totally gaslighting people into thinking they did it and then looking at them so…disappointedly.
