I would question why I need to present that kind of a challenge to players to begin with. Kobolds already have a solid ability in pack tactics that speaks to the way they engage enemies. Counter question: what CR modifier or XP bonus would you place on Tucker’s Kobolds?

I think as a shorthand for an NPC’s personality or view of the world, it was a useful tool. It was much less useful and active source of conflict when it was applied to PCs.

I don’t think you can disentangle the success of 5e from the rise of streaming, CR as the biggest, and most well known AP any more than you can disentangle the success in the broader TTRPG market from Kickstarter/Backerkit. All of these forces worked together in my eyes to lift all boats.
