D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yeah, most NPCs aren’t gonna see combat. And if they do, I just refer to a basic statline in a pinch.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

For me, it’s more of a problem that a PC can’t counterspell it. I can wrap my head around the idea that it’s simply a different “spell” that PCs aren’t meant to have, but if it also doesn’t obey the same rules that govern arcane magic, then it feels too illogical to me. Too gamified.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I loved Ultimate Warrior promos and matches because they were so bizarre but I especially loved when he fought someone like Rick Rude. Rude was so damned good at making that guy look like a million dollars, something other guys couldn’t do.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

That’s true and it’s something that I try to keep in mind for wizard PCs. It’s one of the things I don’t like about sorcerers in general, but I digress. Suffice to say, I like spell books and scrolls as loot, and I like unique spells - that’s something I miss from 2e days.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

Yeah, when I read it I was thinking this is cool but it really needs a verrrrry specific kind of play group to enjoy it.

    Cocktails

Today’s cocktail is a nice, simple Sidecar! 2 oz Cognac 3/4 oz Cointreau 3/4 oz Lemon Juice 1/4 oz Simple Syrup I skipped the sugar rim for me. 😊 Delicious!

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yeah, that’s pretty much what my stat blocks look like. I remember when D&D would list every spell a caster had memorized, and I realized why does it matter? If they’re an archmage, and it’s not likely to come up in an encounter, just assume they have the spell.

    THE LONG WALK Trailer 2

I require video evidence! It was faked, I tell you! You can see the wires! 😉

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I don’t tend to design NPCs as single encounters, and I try not to set them up in ways where I’m predetermining the ending, I.E. the villain must escape the first encounter in order to something else later. I find monsters that already fit the CR and adjust the spells as needed, usually figuring...

    THE LONG WALK Trailer 2

Heard about this - my take is I want video proof or it didn’t happen. Sounds too clickbaity an idea to actually try.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

I would LOVE to play Brindlewood Bay but I absolutely know I am the only one in my group who digs that stuff. 😢

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yeah, I can’t imagine spending an hour whipping up one NPC. Or rather, I could, but that’s absolutely not what I want to be doing.

TTRPG Genres You Just Can't Get Into -and- Tell Me Why I'm Wrong About X Genre I Don't Like

That’s such a great point. Our group’s been playing a lot of different games lately and we’ve taken to people just bowing out for certain games that they just know they’re not going to be into. It’s so much better than showing up and not being engaged or interested.

    Cocktails

Yeah, it’s not quite up there with a Last Word but as a sweeter drink, it’s quite good for a summer cocktail!

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

This is all fantastic because it’s hitting all the domains that I always felt should’ve formed their own fantasy core in Ravenloft, distinct from the more modern 19th century domains like Mordent and Lamordia. Love the work you’re putting into making these seem like a cohesive whole with lots of...

    Spoilers THUNDERBOLTS* (spoilers I guess?)

I think if you look at superheroes solely through the lens of their powers, they're not really relatable. But in their real identities, that's where they often are relatable. Bruce Wayne lost his parents, and is driven by one person's random, senseless act of violence that altered the course of...

    Morality of mind control…

I don't think the word "corrupting" is at all appropriate for the tone of the discussion, whether that's applied to a person (as you did in your initial post, perhaps without intending or knowing it), or for the overall point. There are multiple viewpoints to be had - saying that something is...

    Morality of mind control…

This reminds me of the True Lies quote: Helen: "Have you ever killed anyone?" Harry: "Yeah, but they were all bad." I think that's about as deep as the morality of my games tend to go.
