    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

There are whole classes dedicated to combat. A large part of the rules are about fighting or what happens when you fight. This combat is a fail state stuff ignores the fact that combat is a large part of what players of virtually any generation want in a fantasy game. Not 100% of the time, and...

D&D General Mike Mearls' blog post about RPG generations

Yeah, kits generally gave you abilities and hindrances at first level but didn’t progress. I remember most players settled in on having their PCs be a multiclass because it was the only way to provide some variety as you leveled. Skills and Powers came along and while it was interesting, it also...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Yeah but everything I’ve read seems predicated on that early play style which feels more like a reaction than the actual play that was occurring at that time. Or more to the point: they overshot the mark. If earlier play styles were more deadly, they overemphasized it now.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

This may a retroactive tenet of OSR play but it does not mirror my experiences in playing those older games at the time, and I think the clinging to that tenet is a problem I have with a lot of modern day OSR games.

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

So when it comes to the APs, I will watch some of the creator ones, but to your point, you'll also get some folks who are, let's just say...they're doing the entertainer schtick, and it's more about their personality. I try to find some that are smaller groups running a session or two - Dungeon...

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

Random thought: when I’m playing or GMing a new game, one of the first things I do is look for some actual plays online to get a feel for how close the game matches up to how I think it should run. I’ll do this for board games too. Does anyone else do this?

    Shadowdark Finally Played Shadowdark

My main thought is that SD adventures are structured in a different way than B/X or 1e adventures and the older modules wouldn’t play well without a good amount of DM prep and adjustments. We ran afoul of the casting rules and while my first experience was unintentionally hilarious and set a...

    What's Your Price Limit?

If it’s something that I want and will use, yes, I’ll still pay that price but I’m also selective about the things in that area. If everything is priced at the range, then yes, it makes it hard to justify given that there’s only so many games I’m likely to play at the table.

Seth Green gets scammed out of his NFT and it tanks his new show.

I think if there were actual legitimate uses for them, they would’ve been used as such.

Not sure what necromancy happened here but NFTs…man, those were a bad idea lol. Glad they died a quick death.

    Why do the Actors Matter?

Yeah, as a pure excuse that one never explains, it works, but also…what a missed opportunity to do something interesting with the character.

    Why do the Actors Matter?

It was a cute little line, good for a one off, but had was never reflected in the character, and really never used again as far as I know.

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

Yeah, I’ve listened to his podcast where he’s gone into this and it still feels very much like educated hobbyist but still a lot of uncertainty (obviously Hasbro is not interested in people understanding their financials at the individual brand levels.) Edit: I should mention there’s nothing...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Sometimes, but often it’s because I’m waiting to see how it all ends up. Case in point: I didn’t watch Breaking Bad until it was done and I loved it.

D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

This is why this topic is endless. We simply don’t know the actual revenue and profit numbers for D&D on its own, so we cannot say whether or not it met the goals of the company, and we certainly cannot determine that any given edition failed. What we have is little bits of information that can...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Beets. People have tried to convince me in so many ways that those things are edible, and I’m like “Sure, if you like the taste of vinegar and dirt mixed together.”
