Yeah, gun to head moments are interesting in a sense of testing a character and their alignment. They are not interesting if the GM is doing it to screw somebody with morality gotchas.

It will be interesting to see how it pivots. The slow release of 5E has left a lot of room to add in settings books, player option books, etc.. Hard rule resets are not the only place they have to focus player interest. Of course, there might not be anything popular enough within those aspects...

Part of that is the move to universal design so proficiency + stats rules everything. I like BA and proficiency from a combat sense, but like you, I have issues with how skills shake out from it. PF2 also used a universal proficiency system and its not surprising its skill system also suffers...
