    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I think error is worrying about the particulars. I use it in a general sense. I do not believe every old schooler or even every OSR game is intended to be skill play, I think thats an interest of the person. Now, some games provide a better experience for folks of a skill play mindset, like OSR...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

Not minigiant but someone who finds "skill play" a helpful indicator of the type of game being played. Particularly one of old school pre-Hickman revolution style. Viewing the game as a survival sim. You must track every morsel of food, every drop of water, every single piece of ammo, etc.. You...

Pathfinder 2E I played my first PF2e game this week. Here's why I'm less inclined to play again.

Keep in mind some of the PF2 designers were 4E designers so its not a surprise they took some of the same routes as 4E.

Which 80s wargames and adventure games do you still play?

I’m about 90% the new Catalyst sculpts since 2019. So new minis but my rule book is still old but not dusty. The BT renaissance is indeed a blessing. We just hit 110 badges for our local BT only convention in Minneapolis this December.

I mean, there could be worse autopicks than those two. Unless your league plays three WR.

Are you ready for some Football (Americano)!

What is your fantasy team name this year? I am of two schools of thought. Your team should be a punny name based on a player off your roster who was either top 5 of the draft, or it should be somebody you picked near the bottom. For me this year its Josh Downs. I give you, "Downston Abbey"

Worlds of Design: The Great Divide

Im actually a little more confused as the terms to me seemed like first person exploration vs third person exploration of the experience. The novel descriptions seemed to lead out of a single or main character point of view and into a more dramatic overview of all characters involved. This...

King Kubrick: Ranking Stanley's Best Films

All true, but the first half does all that and ends in an incredibly dramatic way. Even foreshadowed with the conversation about Lee Harvey Oswald and his marine training. Afterwards, its pretty difficult for the second half to catch up to that, let alone top it. Instead you are served a second...

King Kubrick: Ranking Stanley's Best Films

You are absolutely right about the two halves of FMJ. For me its so important becasue of the constant contradiction of institutions and individuality. It marks the skepticism that made Vietnam a war that was different for America. It wasn't exceptional, it was brutal. Today, of course, we have...

King Kubrick: Ranking Stanley's Best Films

I agree with the write up here, even if I disagree with the ranking. That first half has some of the best captured performances of any Kubrick film. The timing was perfect, the casting so excellent, the writing so fantastic. I gotta note too, the Joker character was so generation X and for...

    D&D General 6E But A + Thread

I think the era of monthly adventure material is over, sadly. Though, id love to see a monthly adventure module from WotC for a 6E in which it was a complete adventure with lite links to the next so they can be chained into a campaign like APs. Even if it was digital only (not going to happen...

Not really, no. Other than using odd numbered dice sets, its very pre-D20.

DCC is not really anything like 3E. Goodman launched a series of modules during the 3E era, which might be why folks occasionally think this.

Which 80s wargames and adventure games do you still play?

Anybody ever played Merchant of Venus by Avalon Hill and Richard Hamblen? I ask because I did a good amount of playtesting the FFG revision that came about 10 some years ago. Normally, I got one or two rounds of a playtest in before FFG was off to the printer. Though, as FFG was about to print...

Which 80s wargames and adventure games do you still play?

One of the things BT did right was compartmentalize the advanced game rules by later years in the game setting. So, succession wars and clan invasion (which is what I play 80% of the time) is still the same. Dark Age and Ilclan the modern eras adds a lot of technology but the base is all...

What's the most efficient way to plan a one-shot TTRPG adventure?

You seem to have real good instincts! For me I want to get a full experience in a 4 hour window. By full I mean 3-4 encounters, social, exploration, and combat. Pathfinder society really helped me hone in on a good one shot. A lot of it is not making the scope too large. Though, pacing is...
