D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

That was me. I've had HP issues for a long time. At least for me, 4e is not the edition that shall not be named. There are parts of it that I really liked (especially the DM-facing stuff). FWIW: Depending on how you view the Stamina/Health rules like that (at least as house rules) had been...

    D&D 5E (2014) How to De-Magic 5e

Can you be a bit more specific about how rare you want magic to be? I mean, I see the following (easy) options as all viable. 1) No caster classes. Magical feats still allowed, so a "caster" is just someone with the ritual caster feat and maybe the magical initiate feat. (perhaps modify them a...

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

Its not about the suspension of disbelief...I just find what I'm asked to believe....well, boring and occasionally nonsensical. And, to your point, I mock it while playing video games as well. "Whew, gotta do some cardio to get my health back up!" "Walk it off, soldier!" "Ahh, the calf muscle...

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

I'm assuming I'm in that group. I play other games, and it works fine. Especially with some caveats: Primarily, not every "hit" has to inflict a consequence. (tuning the fraction that do is something that can really affect the feel of a game.) Secondarily, its handy if conditions have different...

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

I don't play Overwatch, but my kids do. A lot of computer games also have gameplay artifacts like the screen flashing red, your aim knocked off, or a split-second stun effect to go with getting hit. Additionally, you usually have much faster in-game recovery. Plus, "getting killed" actually...

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

I'm fine with the cleric fixing the guy's arm (and note I didn't specify "off", but either way). I guess I've just seen too many "Cure Critical Wounds" used to heal what amounts to a bunch of scratches and bruises.

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

As I understand it, it actually looks like a colored bar above my head. It looks long and green when I am fit and fresh, but shortens and changes to red as I get hit more. I don't mind nebulous resources on the table/gamist level (I think Fate points work great). What I mind is when they inject...

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

My biggest gripe about HP is related to Healing. Heroes getting battered about for little impact is fine...just watch a marvel movie. My problem is when somebody casts a "healing" spell on a guy who...well, isn't wounded. I've been mulling over a solution/response/houserule for this for some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

Not quite. I didn't want to write too superlong of a post, but these things aren't just anti-quirks that you pick for the sake of ignoring them later. They would be grist for leveling mill via the Heroic Achievements. The HAs would be things like "Turn a villainous lieutenant." or "Get the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

I dunno, man. It seems to be doing pretty well as it is. I doubt that will "find it needs" much more for quite some time. I mean, there's tons of stuff I would have D&D do differently (every edition so far). I've just come to accept that it won't and play other games to get those. The only...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

I think that's the first time I've ever heard that taken seriously, rather than a nod towards American braggadocio. 'course, I guess that's how legends develop.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

A lot of stuff came in early like that (Rogues, Rangers, Dwarfs, etc). It made sense at the time. A good portion of the players still looked upon characters as more like game-pieces in a tomb-robbing/murderhobo not-quite-board game, so statting up abilities to differentiate them made sense. For...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

A few do, yes. I think, though, that if you went around and tallied them up, you would find that Cu Cuhlain's story (if there is a singular story that matches what you say and not several...which is also unlikely) is more of an outlier (although I know its your favorite hobby horse). I would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

I actually don't think D&D casters are based on much of anything at all, myth-wise. I know that's the common thought, but for many reasons both gamist and narrative (which you mention) I just don't see D&D magic as being anything like mythological magic. Overall, D&D is a poor way of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

hmm...I wonder how much of the disconnect here is that "mostly level" isn't actually how we see those archetypes in fiction. I mean, many (and arguably the most famous) of the examples trotted out are demigods (or similar). Superman doesn't get to be what he is through hard work and practice, he...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

Fate doesn't seem to run out of these, nor is reusing them much of a problem. Given Fate's more pulpy background, "off balance" is a very common descriptor for what Fate calls a Success With Style. A Fate SWS creates a temporary advantage good only on the next attack and is the result of a roll...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

Thinking a bit more. My "Play Fate" response isn't so crazy. I think Fate would work fine if you tore out the Fate Dice mechanics and replaced it with D&Ds funny dice and the like. (maybe not perfectly, but still.) The multitude of combat statuses, maneuvers, and conditions would be replaced...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

The HP system in general has always had this effect for me. Different editions seemed to emphasize different problems with HP, but there's always something.

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

Two thoughts occurred to me, seeing the OP and this one. 1) Play Fate instead of D&D. By default, it solves this problem in much the way you describe. 2) To be fair, I think this goes back to 1st edition, where it was necessary to comb through nearly random locations in several rulebooks...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the fighter (I know...)

Having played a few ahem other games... IMO/E, the mechanical complexity in 5e exists almost solely to keep the sacred herd alive, rather than support much in the way of playstyles. It certainly isn't necessary to support a wide variety of archetypes.
