    D&D General Four Ability Scores

Personally, I think we could drop all the ability scores. They just add a random layer of imbalance, AFAICT. I'd rather see more capability and skills baked into the class itself, in part harkening back to earlier editions. So all Fighters would be equal in fighting ability, as its a class...

Wendy’s Presents: Feast of Legends (a Late Night Review)

I knew a guy who once ran one of the mecha games (I don't recall which one). He had forgone the original factions in the game and painted all his minis themed for corporate competition in the grimdark future. The Cola Wars were particularly interesting to me, but the Ford and Chevy mechs were...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for Victorian era aesthetic - no armor

In a Victorian setting....sure (at least using D&D as a base). It makes a lot of genre sense, certainly worked in Boot Hill. Plus, I don't think it would warp things that much more than they already are. You'd still have folks maximizing their attack stat. Additionally, I would think you would...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for Victorian era aesthetic - no armor

How will you handle gun damage? HP always seems rather odd with the way guns work, IMO.

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for Victorian era aesthetic - no armor

hmm....why Con Bonus? With guns in the mix, I think Dex is where I would stay (unrealistic, but fantastic). I would see the Con bonus already baked into the HP total.

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for Victorian era aesthetic - no armor

Perhaps it should be a movement action? Like, if you're bolting across the field, you don't have time to parry, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) When do you think a character build concept reaches maturity?

This is one of my petty gripes about D&D, and through inheritance most rpgs. When the success of a concept is dependent upon getting little mechanical tidbits at each level, it requires the game to progress a certain way.... Which doesn't seem like a big deal until you play or run other games...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for Victorian era aesthetic - no armor

Sounds doable. Do these bonuses only apply to melee combat? and...Victorian era, will you be adding guns?

Campaign Set in a Magic School

How do you want it to play, just traditional dungeoncrawling or school drama? If school drama, I might take a look at Smallville, seems like that could be adapted. If traditional dungeoncrawling...the thing that sticks out to me is that students will be less competent than full-fledged...

D&D 5E (2014) Kit bashing an Infernal war machine?

Not working on one myself. But I would use the first one. Although the bunny one would be amazing.

Experiencing the fiction in RPG play

Fine evidence, IMO, that Lew and I exist in different realities. I've always found the idea that monsters always hole up in reverse castles that they dig underground to make it easier to kill them ludicrous in the extreme. And yet, that is the very premise of the game. Almost everything I ever...

Experiencing the fiction in RPG play

Wait, Old-School adventures aren't silly and totally unbelieveable? I am confused.

Experiencing the fiction in RPG play

I agree wholeheartedly WRT D&D and most traditional rpgs. Nonetheless, there are games out there that do a better job of baking a story structure into the game. Blades in the Dark, for example, is certainly an rpg and it generates serial stories about a gang of criminals. (Although the GM still...

D&D General Character Backstory System That Works

If you have a chance to do a "Session Zero", I highly recommend it. see: the Fate SRD. Blades in the Dark also has players choose two NPCs to have relationships with, one positive and one negative. It brings the players into the creative process of generating the world a bit more than D&D...

Absolutely. I mean, what's the point, otherwise?

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Wall of Faithless in 5e?

So, what I'm getting from this thread is that all D&D deities (but perhaps especially the FR ones) are really just powerful extra-dimensional dictators and terrorists that love them some boundless coercion. I'm not sure that's the message the creators were hoping for. Maybe a bit of a miss...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

That works for old-school dungeoneering, but not so much for folks like me, who are more interested in the heroic adventure story aspect. I'm not so much worried about a simulation of reality, but more a nod to fiction. In heroic fiction, an examination of morals is often a big deal and a...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I think neutral, has a fundamental problem. That is, "uncaring about such concerns" vs. "want to see balance in those concerns". So, on the law-chaos axis, you could have a character A, who just kinda floats through life recognizing there is authority/law, but not really giving it too much...

    Drowning in (Character Sheet) Details

Generally, I think character sheets reflect the game for which they are designed. That said, I tend to favor games with simple character sheets, like the Fate you mentioned. I've just grown fatigued of all the layers of detail and design that games like D&D seem to require. I much prefer things...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Magic the Gathering setting would you want added officially to D&D?

I think I'd say Kamigawa, just for the massive pile of new monsters, etc. I'm finding traditional D&D stuff to be a little done.
