    D&D 5E (2014) 9 Things "Pro" DMs Do That You shouldn't

It’s funny, because for me watching these “actual plays” really demystified the game and how things should go at the table. I don’t understand this constant fear of exposure to pro DMs and players. No one thinks that after watching a pro ball game they’ll be able to replicate it. But they have...

    D&D 5E (2014) Arora 5e setting kickstarter

looks cool but I’m a bit exhausted by apocalyptic stuff, the real world is enough! I would love to see some bright sky fantasy adventure paths set in fantastic lands.

    D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) is 5e missing?

Yep I’m not looking for reality, simply proportion.

    D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) is 5e missing?

The lack of accounting for mass in falling damage rules continues to irk me. It’s not missing from the rules just wrong. Instead of the d6 it should be based on the size of the object/creature: Tiny: no falling damage, they always effectively featherfall. Small: d4 Medium: d6 Large: d8 Huge...

    D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) is 5e missing?

Right, the good old “Don’t ask the dice to answer stupid questions!” disclaimer in action adjudication.

    D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) is 5e missing?

I’ve mentioned it before but I’ll do it again, a system for tracking time in dungeons. Yes they talk about it, but don’t actual give any examples of how one might do it at the table. There are some fantastic 3rd party systems which is great, but it should be in the core books IMHO.

D&D 5E (2014) Mines of Phandelver - Need Help With a BBEG Brainstorm

As a new DM when I ran this I was more confused than creative. I didn’t want to have to work to make it my own, I wanted to practice action adjudication and running combat. IMHO this is better described as an intro to 5e for existing players (especially given their almost unanimous praise)...

D&D 5E (2014) Mines of Phandelver - Need Help With a BBEG Brainstorm

For me it’s because this module gets so much praise, when I found it to have numerous issues, and the anticlimactic finale was the biggest. So I was trying to warn the OP of that eventuality.

D&D 5E (2014) Mines of Phandelver - Need Help With a BBEG Brainstorm

Yeah, I know, but the OP wanted a memorable finale it seems, so I wanted to warn them of a core issue with the BBEG as written.

D&D 5E (2014) Mines of Phandelver - Need Help With a BBEG Brainstorm

The Black Spider is woefully under powered. Increase the HP and give him some legendary actions. He was a great disappointment when I ran him as spec’d.

D&D 5E (2014) Declarations that start combat vs. initiative

To avoid all this, I roll initiative at the end of the previous encounter in order to smoothly transition into combat rounds when things get dangerous.

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

i think it’s quite different because the HP number I came up with was a guess and at very high levels we’re talking a very wild guess! So I feel perfectly OK refining my guess when the plan encounters the players. I also think it’s important that junior DMs know that it’s OK to make adjustments...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

Coming in late to this discussion, so apologies if I’m repeating a point made already. My opinion is if I’m doing my job as DM I’m turning the dials of the game to match the capabilities of my players in order to challenge them appropriately. I do that as part of my encounter prep of course...

D&D General How to be a Better DM: One Size Doesn't Fit All

That really didn’t work for me and I have to say C3 has mostly been a bit of dud, except for Marisha and Travis‘s character work. The totally random character choices and a city that has turned out to be basically the same as every other city in a DND campaign is wearing a bit thin. Would like...

D&D 5E (2014) New DM with campaign anxiety

You’re making the right to choice to roll your own adventure IMHO. It might seem overwhelming but the advice above about just planning the next session is gold. Sure have an idea of some greater threat lurking but build off what your players respond positively too each session. Running from a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Waterdeep: Dragon Heist Post-Mortem (Spoilers)

I’d really prefer these adventure books to have 3 or 4 separate adventures for the different tiers. So a water deep adventure book would have some tier 1, 2 & 3 adventures (tier 4 seems a bit weird for urban adventures and groups rarely make it that far), the DM is then at liberty to connect...

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

Jumping in at the end, so apologies if I’m restating something already posted. If I look at D&D through the lens of “The Heroes Journey”, I look at the first few levels as “the normal world”. This is where we get to know the characters and see the world they live in and the everyday trials and...
