D&D General On simulating things: what, why, and how?

That seems a DMing issue? I had something similar to this with a purple worm in a tunnel system (the tunnels were actually purple worm trails). PCs attacking the head got the bite attacks PCs at the tail got the stinger. My DMing brain wouldn’t let me make an illogical attack. It wasn’t hard and...

D&D General On simulating things: what, why, and how?

This seems an issue with trying to fit a messy fantasy world into a tidy grid. The problem doesn’t lie with the creatures. The monster manual should describe the from of the creature in squares if the system wants things to make a modicum of sense on a board.

Yeah, but apparently momentum doesn’t. See: falling damage. :)

D&D General On simulating things: what, why, and how?

Here, I think is an issue with time and leveling. We don’t let enough game world time pass between clumps of levels for the shifting context to make sense. WotC‘s adventures of course make a mockery of this with a single house exploration taking adventurers from 1st to 5th level (Death house...

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

Yeah I should have clarified that this was at the beginning of Covid, back when we thought it would be just a couple weeks of isolation…

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

We just did videochat, didn’t adopt a VTT as our campaign was about 95% done,

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

I think publicly acknowledging the problem will be a kindness to the frustrated playersand it opens the door for discussion of solutions. There are lots of things to discuss, but for the player who can’t make a decision that should probably be handled to one side as you discuss methods to...

D&D General Players who take Excruciatingly long turns: solution?

What puzzles me about this kind of thing is, imagine if the DM was like this? The game would be unplayable. When I DM as soon as it’s the monsters turn they pretty much instantly make their attack because I’ve been planning it the whole time. Players need to understand that the time to plan is...

D&D 5E (2014) New Spellcasting Blocks for Monsters --- Why?!

This reminds me of the BB monster I created for the level 20 finale, some unholy mashup of a void dragon from Tome of Beasts, some stats from dave2008’s buffed dragons and the multi-part monster ideas from giffyglyph. I wouldn’t do it for every monster of course, but who doesn’t want their...

D&D 5E (2014) New Spellcasting Blocks for Monsters --- Why?!

Funny, this kind of like how I rewrote stat blocks to make spellcasting monsters easier to run at the table, except I’d also shorthand the spell text too.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's Dragons of Stormwreck Isle's Table of Contents

I’ve said it before, but I think LMoP was an intro adventure to 5e not D&D in general. I.e. a welcome mat for existing players and DMs.

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's Dragons of Stormwreck Isle's Table of Contents

I see this is a Target exclusive for the first couple of months. I wonder how that deal went down? Target’s board game section seems to be a bit stagnant, but perhaps I don’t know what’s popular…

D&D 5E (2014) Wild Beyond the Witchlight + Out of the Abyss

I tried using the 2nd half of OotA in my campaign and for my players it was too monotonous in environment and theme: Oh, another location where the leaders have gone mad and are doing crazy things? In the end the wizard helped me blow it up with a well timed wish spell. In the hands of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) 9 Things "Pro" DMs Do That You shouldn't

Hmm I think learning to run D&D is more like sitting someone down in the cockpit of a 747 and asking them to taxi to the runway and take off. The “engine” is the least of my worries :) But I do agree that not messing with things before you’ve got some sessions under your belt. I still think...

    D&D 5E (2014) 9 Things "Pro" DMs Do That You shouldn't

A new DM is basically a deer in the headlights (I certainly was) so anything that made DMing seem doable was a godsend. And yes after a while I grew comfortable enough to have an opinion, but really having ”actual play” examples was so helpful. I remember when I first starting out I found some...

    D&D 5E (2014) 9 Things "Pro" DMs Do That You shouldn't

Perhaps I’m the exception, but I’m regularly mentally critiquing Mercer’s DMing decisions and thinking what I would do differently. For example he recently had Cheney’s werewolf make a strength check to bust through a wooden door (which of course went against the player) and so what had been a...
