New Warhammer Old World TTRPG Announced

I get that "fléau" there is used in the sense of "bane" or "scourge", but the Flail of Phlegm sounds like a delightfully disgusting magical item...

When to set a "historical" supers game? (read OP before answering poll)

early civilisation and « mythic » age is ripe for supers, who will likely engender myths and religions in the future. Works well for a grand-scale plot, with powerful god-like beings and dark forces as villains. Harder to separate super-powers from religious believes however, if only in the eyes...

The Most Creative TTRPG Settings and Milieus

I was about to nominate Forgotten Realms and the Warhammer RPGs (both fantasy and 40K) as the are still highly creative, original, but admittedly no longer fresh. Same with Star Wars as a setting; very creative, kept surprisingly "fresh", but I wonder to what extent I'd say original as they keep...

D&D General what would a standard human pantheon look like?

Humanoids and monstrous pantheon are based on the assumption that these species are basically mono-cultural across all settings (which kinda make sense if your gods show up saying « that’s who we are, that’s what you are, and that’s how we want you to act »). Moreover, most non-human pantheons...

D&D 5E (2024) Goblins and Orcs Not Being Green

Yeah, green orcs and goblins are a Warhammer thing. I suspect a relatively benign reason behind this, such as "green is more fun/contrasting to paint on minis than grey" But I'd say that because Games Workshop is a hobbyist company, the image of the "green skins" with a protuberant jaw exported...

What Property Do You Still Want to See Get a TTRPG Adaptation

Whoa, you’re taking me way back…

What bespoke RPG is actually really good for other types of campaigns?

I’ve used The One Ring RPG’s system (1st edition) to make a homebrew version of Twilight Imperium RPG (faction-based epic space opera boardgame), and the 2nd edition for a homebrew Star Wars RPG. In the later case, I swapped the roles of cultures (species) and callings (classes). Both worked...

Worlds of Design: Consistent Fantasy Ecologies

That is science. It’s the science of this setting. Scholars gathering and cataloguing empirical information, posing hypotheses, proving them true, and subjecting their discovery to the review of their peers would get those « facts »

Worlds of Design: Consistent Fantasy Ecologies

I'm a big sucker for settings with a consistent and coherent ecology/geology. Note that consistent and coherent does not need to be indisputably realistic, and things don’t need to be realistic to be relatable. Ultimately, "relatable" is what I’m truly going for. Magic can be part of a...

What Property Do You Still Want to See Get a TTRPG Adaptation

For a while I’ve been contemplating making a RPG adaptation of the XCOM franchise. Basically, a modern to near-future sci fi urban warfare based RPG The battle mechanic could almost be ported directly from the xcom2 game using a roll-under d100 system, though converting to d20 would also be...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

That's true. I'm of two minds about that. On one hand, I'd like to emulate stories where injuries present an extra layer of challenge. On the other hand, injuries tend to come up often in RPG - at least how we tend to play them in North America my French friends would say - and for lack of...

RPG Print News – Free League, Arc Dream Publishing, Chaosium, and More

Any samples or preview for the Geologist/Herbalist Primers (couldn't see one from website)? That could be right in my alley but hard to tell if it's something I'd find useful/tasteful.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your Experience Like with '24?

Only two or three games in, but the consensus at the table is that it looks like it's gonna be a positive gain from the 2014 edition once we gather some momentum, because at the moment it's slooooooow. Many, many little modifications that do not drastically change anything but makes us doubt...

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

My thoughts are that it would incite alignment debates and encourage disruptive behaviour, which are two things I truly hate. Players being jerks and pointing to their alignment to explain « that’s how my character would react » is something I cannot stand, never mind getting some sort of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Overthinking Long Rest in 2024

Joke aside, by the rules, you will be able to have long rests before midnight again. Just not tomorrow. So in D&D, if you go to bed too late, your next night might not finish a long rest if you have to get up early. You’ll have the benefit of a short rest, but not a long one. In short in D&D...

D&D General How do you use giants in your game?

As I tend to dial down to a 6 or 7 what I often feel D&D has cranked to 11, I often reduce the size of giants. An 8-foot dude weighting close to a ton and wielding the equivalent of a 10-inch diameter baseball bat should be f*****g terrifying, there is no need to go all the way to 15-20 feet...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Fixing" electrum pieces - looking for a player's perspective

From a player perspective, I’m willing to track two types of coins (usually silver and gold). Everything else is just a value of silver and gold. Now, i like when the DM colours the world with electrum and copper and platinum but ultimately, they are just X silver or gold on my character sheet...

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

Since updated rules for downtime and crafting in Xanathar, I don’t think I even opened it. I read it through and trough when I first got it, used it a bit for magic items. It was definitely a useful book but it lost its relevance as more and more supplements got published.
