What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

Gotta get your chainmail bikini from somewhere!

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

Ooooh, tough choice. I’m gonna go for a sentimental value here: Planescape Monster Appendix II. You know, the one with the Aasimar chick. As a work of art alone it has its worth. There are many more I could think of but this is the one that sprung to mind immediately.

D&D 5E (2014) Guns and D&D - are we doing it wrong? An alternative

The one campaign I DM that featured guns (and cannons and firework-like missiles) were basically the martial equivalent of save-for-half-damage spells. All dealt some automatic damage, Dex save for half. Handgun had a range (a short-ish one, like 30ft I think). Within range it was something like...

Keys to have good PuG sessions for TTRPG's?

Same. The only pug I know about wouldn’t stop humping my leg. I have a feeling we’re not talking about the same thing…

D&D 5E (2014) Players, would you play in a game that only used the 5.1 SRD?

A good and enthusiastic DM can sell me anything so, yes? In itself it wouldn’t be a selling point however, and I would be much more interested in a PHB-only game than a SRD-only game, partially because SRD means no feats (or one feat?) and I prefer feats to ASI.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the highlights of D&D 5th edition for you?

some of the highlights I have in mind may have more to do with the decade than the game itself but... A conscious effort of inclusion and de-racialization Matt Mercer and Critical Role and live-streaming in general. Not unique to 5e but popularized during the growth of 5e. Meeting (and clash)...

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

I mostly prefer roll high because the allocation of bonuses and penalties is easier to comprehend. For me the disconnect isn’t about smaller number being “better”, it’s that bonuses translates to a “minus”, and penalties translate into a “bonus” to the roll. Totally psychological, but likes...

D&D General What are the “boring bits” to you?

Echoing some poster above, the various-type spells and other effects that as a player prevents you from playing. "skip your turn" in a Uno or Skip-Bo game where a whole table round take 10 seconds is one thing. It's another when your next turn is in several minutes, waiting to see if maybe...

D&D 5E (2014) Turn 2 full casters into pact casters

Bard is the obvious choice for me; that keep them potent spellcasters without feeling like full spellcasters. Win. Then I’d choose Druid. That would give them a stronger class identity than “other nature cleric”. Beside, if we’re going for symmetry, might as well have a divine pact caster in...

RPG Writing and Design Needs a Paradigm Shift

To my own taste, Late Pathfinder (1E) is much better than PF2 or 4e. A page full of 4e blocks like that gives me headaches. Looking back, I can say that my gripe with 4e was one of presentation, not content.

    Is TTRPGing an "Expensive Hobby"

As far as hobbies go, it's certainly among the cheapest although it CAN get expensive (like most hobbies) when you go beyond the strict necessities. But even then, it's still cheap compared to other hobbies. I have friends whose hobby is "walking". They spend hundreds of dollars on shoes and...

RPG Writing and Design Needs a Paradigm Shift

While I agree that rules should be presented clearly, I wouldn’t want my RPG books to read and feel like manuals. I’d rather read a 1-line prose followed by a 2-line description of an ability than looking for rule 1.4.2-1 Dry manuals are dry. I need the art, the aesthetically pleasing fonts and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

Of course I will switch! It’s like the old Malibu Stacy but with a NEW HAT! It will be shiny and hot, new art, slight adjustments that will make monsters easier to use, consolidated character options. I’m a sucker for these things! The real question will be whether we revert back to 5e 2014...

What TTRPGs have the best tactical combat rules?

The One Ring (especially 1st edition) also deserves a special mention. 2e is IMO better overall but the tactical side has been downplayed a bit. But basically… Each round, choose one of four combat stances (translating as agressive, neutral, defensive, and ranged combat), each allowing specific...

What TTRPGs have the best tactical combat rules?

I played two sessions of Iron Kingdom, which looked pretty tactical but never had the chance to delve very deep in that aspect of the rpg. Older, more Vancian editions of D&D were also very tactical (or could be depending on how groups ignore certain rules or not); not so much on melee combat...

D&D General Top selling 5E official non-core 3 books? / Why aren't adventure books catching fire?

That should be the expected ratio however, even if adventures were really good. Looking at my gaming group (6-7 people, 2-3 of which DM in rotation); 5 of us have a PHB. Having spells handy is handy. 4 of us have DMG and MM, even if at least one of us never uses them. 3 have Tasha and Xanatar...

D&D General 50th Anniversary- Are You Not Entertained?

As far as RPG products go, I can't say I had much higher expectations than what's announced. We're getting a 50th-aniversary re-edition so that's not insignificant. I would have expected something Greyhawk-related however... I was expecting some kind of publicity stunt, but there's still time...

    Grading the Rolemaster/Spacemaster System

Warm nostalgic feeling from my first RPG. It has some really good stuff but it's ultimately too heavy for my taste nowadays. There were days when I really dug that stuff however. When I was first introduced to 3e D&D, my first reflex was to think “cool, it’s like rolemaster scaled down to d20...
