    D&D 5E (2014) Randomness and D&D

This is a non issue in skill based games. I think that it is largely a matter of conflicting expectations due to the way D&D scales combat damage and HP, vs. its skill progression. ^This^ You do not roll unless the PC is having to perform under stress of some kind, and failure is meaningful...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC On One D&D Playtest Survey Results: Nearly Everything Scored 80%+!

Because barring 4e, D&D has managed to be 'good enough' for the majority of its player base. Being First + Good Enough = No can Defend. Because being first is VERY powerful when it comes to RPG's. By 2e D&D had already cemented its market leader position. And the network effect of being the...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC On One D&D Playtest Survey Results: Nearly Everything Scored 80%+!

In my opinion; CR is impossible to get right. Too many variables, too many moving targets. At best they can only give you a rough guideline to bounce your game experience off of. Literally their plan.

D&D 5E (2024) WotC On One D&D Playtest Survey Results: Nearly Everything Scored 80%+!

Evidently they all very much wanted to though... And they should be combined or eliminated altogether as needed. Of course not! I have my preferences but I'm not delusional. If anything, I fully expect WotC to add new races and sub-variants as often as they think that they can get away...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC On One D&D Playtest Survey Results: Nearly Everything Scored 80%+!

Yes, that thing. If it is better than what I said, then that's what I meant! ;) That's the thing. WotC said that their average "campaign" lasts something like six sessions. I just don't see how that is enough time to engage enough players to become the hobbyist GM's that will support the...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC On One D&D Playtest Survey Results: Nearly Everything Scored 80%+!

I've always thought Gnome/Halfling should just be different names for the same thing. Never saw the need to have two similar small races that could just be made into one. A good start, but... The division that they should have made from the beginning is between results from Players vs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Randomness and D&D

FWIW - DATAFORTRESS 2020 - Cyberpunk 2020 at it's finest Has lots of Interlock stuff for free with the permission of R.Tal. Personally I'd trim stuff down a lot, and go with an AC system to emulate the D&D feel.

    D&D 5E (2014) Randomness and D&D

Interlock games do this. 1d10 with an attribute scale of 1-10 and skills that go to 1-10. I have seen versions where they used 1d12, or even 2d6 and not change much else. The old decipher LoTR games were 2d6 with attributes -3 to +5 and skills 1-12. It tries to emulate the math of 3.x d20... I...

    Cyberpunk Edgerunners Mission Kit Announced

In bold is the obvious no brainer. Of course they would reach a far wider audience. Why R.Tal did not just adopt the CPR2077 setting wholesale from the beginning is still a headscratcher. He certainly uses their concept art in the CPRed game book, why not just crib their setting notes as well...

    Cyberpunk Edgerunners Mission Kit Announced

Absolutely baffling that CPRed does not share the same universe as the videogame. A total headscratcher why Pondsmith would do a separate timeline for RED. ^THIS^ His review highlighting the rules inconsistencies was spot on. When you are having to houserule obvious holes in the rules from...

WotC WotC's Chris Perkins On D&D's Inclusivity Processes Going Forward

Greenwood mashes up European cultures just as bad in the FR as the Design Mechanism did with Mythic Polynesia. That is not a strawman - which would be an an intentionally misrepresented proposition. There is nothing misrepresented about the way the Forgotten Realms makes all the same mistakes...

WotC WotC's Chris Perkins On D&D's Inclusivity Processes Going Forward

It's good to know that despite being born and raised on a completely different continent, the mere fact of his genetic European descent imbues him with a natural expertise on all things medieval Europe. Evidently this is true, if like Ed Greenwood, you are of European descent. They are...

WotC WotC's Chris Perkins On D&D's Inclusivity Processes Going Forward

This reminds me a lot of what D&D has done with it's Medieval European influences in settings like the Forgotten Realms: Naturally I expect that WotC will get right on this...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Monty Python, Paranoia, M&M and More

Exactly. In theory it has lots of benefits, but, you have to score 'big'.... It is very difficult for fantasy RPG's without a long standing brand name like WFRP, to gain any traction. The AGE system is just a slightly different way to do what D&D does, and unfortunately for GR pathfinder was...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Monty Python, Paranoia, M&M and More

I think that this is a bigger factor than many are willing to admit. In my opinion, crunch really needs to pay off at the table if you are making a game more complicated than 5e.. Shadowrun 6 failed to do this, and landed with a thud. I also don't think that the AGE system based games have...

WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

There is no reason a re-released setting cannot remain true to what has come before, and be presented in a digestible format that new players can grok. There is no either/or here. Now if you didn't like the original setting to begin with - just say you don't like it. Changing it around so much...

WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

Hickman and Weis had to literally sue WotC to be able to finish the latest trilogy. I seriously doubt that there will be more novels forthcoming after that love fest.

WotC Dragonlance: Everything You Need For Shadow of the Dragon Queen

All things being equal, yes. But the devil is in the details, and the amount of older lore that actually did need to change is, and was, much, much smaller than the wholesale lore changes WotC ultimately did make. That is their prerogative. They own the IP. I just don't think that WotC is...
