    D&D 5E (2014) Weird Monk Mentality?

Monks ARE weird, conceptually. They don't fit the theme of D&D at all, period. The typical D&D settings seem to always forget about the class and there's very little flavor support (unless you get into campaigns that are basically ALL about monks). It doesn't make much sense to have a Western...

    D&D 5E (2014) when Strahd attacks (spoilers)

I think that's more along the lines of what the module was suggesting, yeah. I've run it that way before as well, and it works. Good point - the character that Strahd dresses up as to fool the angel is one that's been used in other media about Strahd. Maybe that character approaches the party...

    D&D 5E (2014) when Strahd attacks (spoilers)

Strahd is supposed to attack the party early and often. He's the centerpiece of the adventure, and you want his presence to be felt as much as possible - but there's also the danger of seriously jumping the shark. "Attacking the party early and often" goes against millennia of established...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

Another minor plot hole: the Krezk couple had their four kids die from "illness." Meanwhile they have a magical pond out back that cures any disease. *facepalm* (To be fair, it only works "the first time" someone drinks from it, but STILL. That's pretty lousy. I'd probably change it so...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

Here's another minor plot hole: if the players take Strahd to 0 HP in Krezk, for example, they win. Or the Amber Temple. Or the druid hill. Or really anywhere that's more than 8 miles from the castle: Strahd's mist form only goes 20' per round, and he only has 2 hours to get back to the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

I mean, here's a thought: maybe the castle (or Strahd's tomb at the least) is unhallowed against celestial creatures. That keep the angel from confronting him because he can never actually win since he can never keep him from regenerating in his coffin. Also, maybe Strahd never told the angel...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

I'm not sure you can train a tiger to only kill the "evil" vistanti, as opposed to the neutral or good ones. I mean, at the very least, it will also attack and try to kill Ezmerelda if she's with the group. Also, "find" isn't what the tiger is used for - "kill" is what the tiger is used for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

So, back to the main thread: let's talk about that tiger more. First, it is just a weird situation that a character who is trying to fight vampires has a tiger that is trained to kill humans. It's also not a very lawful good solution to the problem. It seems wildly out of character, and...

I meant to say that this is a great idea, and I am going to use it!

Queer As A Three-Sided Die: Round Table From GaymerX3

Thank you for saying this in a constructive way. I couldn't come up with one.

    D&D 5E (2014) does Daylight make daylight?

It sounds like a dumb question but the spell's description doesn't say that it's actual daylight. Just a "sphere of light." This is of some concern if fighting a vampire. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) spells for a mage-hunting sorcerer?

Very nice suggestion, thanks! I'd forgotten all about the UA options.

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

Ok now you got me curious. :) I couldn't find any reference to a year 528 in the original I6, but I did read that the real Burgomaster's letter says, "For over 400 years he has drained this land of the life-blood of its people." So I guess that's where they got the ~400 years from.

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

Again: however you want to tell it. Here's what a sidebar in the CoS book says: "Strahd was born in 306." (No "BC" or other markers given.) "Strahd ...finished construction of Castle Ravenloft in 350, and died and became a vampire in 351. The current year is 735." So draw from that what...

D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd: Travel time in Barovia (minor spoilers)

I agree, although to me it looks more like 18 miles (did you go through the camp at the falls or around?). Still, that's between 5 and 6 hours of normal travel pace (PHB) or about 1 day's worth of travel. Also that would make logical sense; towns would spring up about a day's travel away from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

The point is that the DM can do a "reading" just to have default values in case the characters never see Madam Eva. It's a failsafe, and yeah - would be very difficult for the players if that were the case. Or you can just shoehorn them into seeing Madam Eva. :) (Or Ezmerelda. Or however.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

That's a good way to go - probably the best way to keep all the surprises but also start them in Barovia. It would be hard for them to come up with much of an interesting background, though. Unless it was all in their mind? That might be neat: basically the character is insane and thinks...

    D&D 5E (2014) spells for a mage-hunting sorcerer?

What thematically appropriate, early spells would you suggest for a sorcerer who wants to be a mage-hunter? I'm talking about spell levels 1-3. Alter Self, for example, seems like a great one, so you can sneak up on your prey. What are others? (The bigger question here being: when you only...

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

This thread is impossibly long already, but here's a post from earlier: I don't know if you were looking for a consort per se, but the short answer is yes: it would be thematically appropriate.

    D&D 5E (2014) Curse of Strahd spoiler-filled general discussion

I agree with your gut. As mentioned, it ruins a lot of the surprise, but it also ruins the "outsider" feel you get. It also weakens the overall driving force for the entire campaign - that the PCs want to leave. Anyway, our group started to think in that direction and I pushed it away - it's...
