    Star Trek United

I had to look up the name, but as soon as I saw the actor I was all "Yes!" Shran was an awesome character.

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

With the responses to this thread, I kind of feel like that might be the situation with me. I think I've seen a few posts in other threads here that have made me think that it wasn't well received. I can understand not all of it really working, but when I read it I didn't think it was terrible.

    Star Trek United

This could be quite cool, even if it was a single season I think it would be a fun watch. I feel like I'm one of only dozens that liked Enterprise, would be great to see Archer return.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I oscillate between preferring NPCs (as in other humanoid wizards, fighters, paladins, etc) to be built like PCs and to be built like monsters. With all of the abilities, building them like a monster and not worrying too much about class level is definitely much easier, but I prefer that some...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I'd forgotten that comeliness was a thing in UA, I think I saw that and opted against porting it into my 2e games. Back when we played ADnD since it was 2e we just used the 2e classes and level limits, but thinking about it now, it seems weird to be so restricted, bring on those halfling druids...

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

I wonder if that's the difference, I was reading it when I was a teenager and thought it brought in some cool ideas.

AD&D 1E What was so bad about unearthed arcana 1e?

Just out of curiosity, something I see mentioned from time to time was that unearthed arcana was considered bad or unusable. I remember reading it back in the 90s and liking some stuff about it, but I never used it in 2e (which I was playing at the time). I probably didn't have as critical an...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

That's not quite how I read the OP, but I might be wrong.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

It might not say it in current DnD, but it's fairly common in fiction that people need the spark of magic before unlocking the ability to make use of it.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

I make no distinction between wizard and sorcerer, both need inborn power in the fiction. Warlocks borrow power.

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

Yeah, DnD faiths and pantheons are a little weird since, while the common people might worship the pantheon, clerics have been shoehorned into worshiping a very specific god, often forsaking the others. I think also the pantheons often don't feel like one, the forgotten realms pantheon just...

Approaching writing adventures for home games?

Sorry, I don't mean to say every adventure is a dungeon, just that the adventure I created in the forest was. It had clearings (rooms), forest paths (dungeon corridors) linking them and various encounters in the clearings or on the paths. The only real difference was that unlike a dungeon, you...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

Mate, you don't need to be so defensive, this is just a conversation, I'm not attacking you, I'm just giving an alternate perspective on how it might work. I even agreed that it might become common practice, even if the average person can't afford the resources.

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

That was actually a thing in 3e (having just looked it up), the soul might not even want to come back which would cause the spell to fail. I can imagine some arguments around the table if a player said "No, I'm good" after their friends spent time and money organising a raise dead for them :ROFLMAO:

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

Sacrificing to before a sea voyage Umberlee makes sense to me. If there is a god of the seas that might drag you down to the bottomless depths of the ocean, it wouldn't be surprising for someone to make an offering before the trip. If you're a farmer inland who follows the faerunian pantheon but...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

Maybe this would be a thing for the wealthy, but even in 5e a 500gp diamond is likely out of reach for the majority of the population. Which isn't to say that keeping the body preserved for 10 days wouldn't become a a common ritual as you've outlined here, but, for example, I don't think many...

Approaching writing adventures for home games?

I've created an adventure in a forest that was essentially a dungeon with permeable walls. I had clearings that were linked by paths but nothing stopped players going off the beaten track. For each clearing I had different encounters, some of them knew about other clearings (as in what was in...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

I sort of wonder how much a typical inhabitant would "know" about the way things work. There are priests of the gods who claim how the world works but most of the followers of the gods would have to take it on faith. Just because priests have magic doesn't mean it is necessarily divine, after...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

That's like, a 100% increase in authors that I thought used it! I had no idea about Anderson, I always thought it was just a Moorcock creation.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Not surprising considering its origin was from a single author as a background to his stories. Alignment has moved from "Do you align with the cosmic forces of Law or Chaos" to become instead each characters moral compass. It can be a useful tool to help determine how your character acts but I...
