WotC Monster Art Contest Winner Announced

Those are brilliant... Perhaps a thread is needed to stat them up?

    White Dwarf Reflections #1

One of my most treasured possessions is my White Dwarf #1 to #100 collection, all in their official red binders. I go through them once a year, get all misty-eyed and nostalgic thinking back of a time when things were somehow simpler: we seemed to have more more fun with less and didn't sweat...

    D&D = American + European Fantasy

I remember reading this on a forum once: In American stories, the hero succeeds because he is powerful. (ex. Conan) In European stories, the hero succeeds despite being weak. (ex. Frodo) I think that D&D clearly falls into the first category. That said I wonder if there is a trend in that...

Get Ready To Pre-Order Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Fourth Edition!

So C7 has put up a system "preview" on their site. I use finger-quotes because it doesn't really tell us anything we didn't already know (or infer) from their pre-order blurb. How about an actual example of how the different skill checks work? Their run-up to 4th edition has really been weak...

D&D Has the Biggest Playerbase, So Why is it the Hardest for 3rd Party to Market Too?

I'm willing to bet that most D&D players around the world will either have no idea or only have a vague notion that 3pp content even exists. There is a natural tendency for "super-fans" (such as those frequenting these boards, people going to conventions, etc.) to think that the rest of the...

Advice: A less hectic workday for my D&D characters

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I think I'll try the "short rest = 8 hours and Long Rest = Suitable Downtime" approach.

Advice: A less hectic workday for my D&D characters

I've read in multiple different places that one of the core assumptions in D&D 5e is a workday of around 6 encounters (combat or some other obstacles that consume resources) per day. The rate of HP, ability and spell recovery is based around that figure. If, for whatever reason, I'd prefer a...

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

We use the "Reroll HPs every level and take the new total if it’s higher than the previous one" method. Has the fun of rolling for hit points while still tending towards average. An alternate method we’ve used in the past is "roll 3 hit dice and pick the middle one".

News Digest: Dungeon Fantasy New Release, #AprilTTRPGMaker, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Release Date,

<sigh> And still nothing from C7 on Woofrup4... other than some cover art we've got nothing. It's quieter than a Halfling's weight-watchers meeting over on their website :'( We know more about the Moria boxed set for TOR/AiME than we know about one of their flagship games. Come on, give us...

[UPDATED] Most D&D Players Prefer Humans - Without Feats!

There's loads of theorycrafting and analysis going on here as to why Feats don't appear to be popular. I haven't read every post in this thread but my explanation is way simpler: In my experience, Players are generally lazy. I suspect this is probably more true for casual players which, I...

New Agenda Publishing To Promote Diverse Voices In RPG Communities

How will their games be different from any other publisher’s or, put another way, is this about who writes the games and not what they’re about?

RPG Crowdfunding News 076: SIGMATA, Tome of Horrors: Reborn, The Idol of Cthulhu, Masters and Minion

Hmm... I wonder what sort of reception the "Better Dead Than Red" roleplaying game (as a fictional counterpoint to Sigmata) would get? IMHO, either of these type of game is the last thing we need right now.

Cubicle 7 Wants You To Speak, Friend, Then Enter

Interesting... I didn't pick up on that over at the C7 forums. Anyways, while the economy of scale is certainly a valid point, there may be a licensing limitation that could prevent the publication of a dual-statted product. Two product identities on the same SKU could be seen as "diluting the...

Cubicle 7 Wants You To Speak, Friend, Then Enter

I haven't seen any evidence other than fan-speculation that this product will be dual-statted. Personally I hope they don't go down that road... I don't want any AiME in my TOR book thank-you-very-much :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling Hit Points Tweak

If you want to have a bell-curve without changing averages, there's a simple technique: Roll 3 dice of the required type and pick the middle result. This doesn't change the possibility that a player could still land up gaining just 1 HP but the chances are much reduced (using a d8, for example...

D&D 5E (2014) Hit Point Recovery Too Generous

I have given up trying to rationalize what exactly HP's represent in real-life. I just view them as a resource that needs to be managed by the players and balanced against risk and reward. One of the underlying assumptions behind the HP economy is that a typical group as something like like 4-6...

    The One Ring Roleplaying Game

5 out of 5 rating for The One Ring Roleplaying Game When I watched the Extra Features on the Lord of the Rings BluRay boxed sets I was amazed at the detail, love and attention the producers of the movies put into their creation. This is the role-playing analog to that: Expertly crafted...

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

On the other hand it could also be less work: You don't have to worry about balance or designing specific encounters. You just write down what you think would be reasonable prison breakdown (10 x 2nd Level Guards, 2 x 5th Level Captains, etc.) The rest will come out in the wash...
