    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

I would not consider Charmed to be a perceptible effect. I would, however, consider the casting of the Friends spell to be potentially noticeable due to the somatic component and 10' range, and thus something the target could be aware of, and take into account once the charm wore off.

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

So, the Miss Step idea evolved from the mention of the Drunken Master subclass getting a free disengage when you use Flurry of Blows (plus an extra 10' speed for that turn). This also seems related to Step of the Wind. Looking at Step of the Wind and features tied to it: Step of the Wind gives...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

So my first draft of spreadsheeting the monk was lacking in a few areas. I've updated it, and will give an explanation of how I modeled the subclass features for clarity (and correction, if appropriate). Here's a general comparison of some monk builds: Discipline Points: I set a reserve pool...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

That isn't the right way to calculate the average DPR against the barbarian. Rounding after averaging is not a valid approximation. You'd want to apply the rounding before averaging. Recalculating: The goblin does 1d6+2 damage, so potential outcomes are {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}. Applying the damage...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

Uh, no. It means 2d6(+Dex) + 1d4 + 2d10(+Dex), plus Vex, is more damaging than 4d10(+Dex) without Vex. And yes, the numbers confused me a bit at first, too, when I first did the comparison, before remembering that Vex was part of the equation.

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

What do you mean by "DI"? I don't recognize the abbreviation. For Flurry of Blows, I used 50% of the Discipline Point (DP) pool per short rest, up to a max of 6 (two fights of 3 rounds each), out of a max of 6, to determine the percent of time Flurry of Blows was used. So from level 12 up, it...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

How about a graph for your comparisons? This shows two monk builds. The first build is just straight hand-to-hand. The second build dual wields a handaxe + dagger (Nick), which leaves the bonus action free for the bonus martial arts strike or Flurry of Blows. The dagger adds very little to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8: Cantrips

Not sure why you're comparing those. Shillelagh would come from Magic Initiate, which is a level 1 feat, and isn't competing with Great Weapon Master, which is a level 4 feat. Not sure who this would be for. Your response seems to be on whether Shillelagh would work for barbarian, but barbarian...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fighter (Playtest 7)

Yeah, it's a very strange feature grant so late in the game. In fact... If I get rid of the damage scaling dice from Shillelagh, and just give +PB damage as a subclass feature from level 3, and only expect a 1d6 typical improvised damage die, then the overall curve is right on par with the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fighter (Playtest 7)

Granted, it's still up to the DM. However this basic condition in the rules is why you can have anything other than the default damage dice at all (1d4), and the premise for why using improvised weapons can be considered anything above garbage tier in the first place (part of the original...

    D&D 5E (2024) Fighter (Playtest 7)

So I never put the Brawler into my spreadsheet, as it just felt clunky, and I wasn't sure how to frame it. However, I saw an interesting idea mentioned as a side effect of the cantrip updates, and went back to look at the Brawler in terms of damage. First, a feature I'd missed (or forgot) was...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

I misread this at first, and while this idea was shot down, my reading was: You have, and can spend, a number of discipline points each turn equal to your Proficiency Bonus. (I would have used Wisdom modifier, but that gets into weird issues with stat progression.) You essentially never run out...

D&D General Ghost of Saltmarsh Player Max

When my group played Ghosts of Saltmarsh, I think we had 7 people. There was definitely a feeling of it being run for maybe half the group at a time, most of the time. There's often not enough going on in any one location for everyone to really participate at the same time. As long as you can...

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion rules: every pub owner is at least 13th level

I'd agree with the idea of getting rid of Bastion Points, and gating based on gold does seem like a decent approach, though it would take a lot of time to really figure out the details. We wouldn't want it to be too overly-finicky. I've run an experimental build of a Bastion (a residence...

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion rules: every pub owner is at least 13th level

So, continuing the examination of the walls: Building the walls around the square compound with some walkway spacing required 48 wall squares. That costs 12,000 gold and 480 days of construction (assuming no Mason's Guild, which you can't get til level 17). Assuming Bastion Turns of 7 days...

    D&D 5E (2024) Should poison spray be a cone?

Er, no. If a 5' cube is centered on a corner, it will cover 1/4 of each of the connected squares, so won't affect any of the adjacent creatures.

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion rules: every pub owner is at least 13th level

Are you sure about this? I'm getting 9,000 gold and 360 days (1 year) to complete a wall around the starting facilities if you build in a square, or 10,000 gold and 400 days if you build in a line. For my calculations, each roomy facility is 4x4. Placed in a square (with the cramped facility...

D&D 5E (2024) Bastion rules: every pub owner is at least 13th level

On Facilities I don't like the Armory. It's a high cost facility that provides almost no benefit. In the event of an attack, you go from an expected loss of 1.0 defenders to a loss of 0.75 defenders, and have to pay again to have those same benefits in the next attack. It's not worth it in...
