    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

I just keep coming back to these videos with the same complaint: yes, each class should have a distinctive feel, but the most important thing is that each class be playable. I'd rather have three classes that are basically just the fighter, but work, then three classes which are distinct but...

D&D 5E (2014) Fighter should be called Knight and Monk Should be called Fighter, change my mind

JRPGs agree with you. Various vintage RPGs agree with you (Dragon Warriors, for instance). Plenty of folklore agrees with you (Snow White and the seven knights). A lot of early 20th century sources prefer "boxer" for Chinese fighters, but fighter was also used. Whether or not they "should" be...

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

There are limits on what you could spend. The upshot was that you could put characters up against each other with a pretty serious power gap, and it would still work, but the person with the lower stats would just leak HP so fast, it had the feeling of a serious threat.

Any Supers Game that feels Super?

Best overall supers system is probably still DC Heroes 3rd edition. It has scaling (even better than M&M), a good combat system (and quicker than Champions), a mix of old school roll-and-go mechanics with a Hero Point economy that allows a more dramatic focus, and really clean character sheets...

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

I think we can generally agree that most fantasy literature does not use the D&D magic system. Heck, plenty of official D&D books don't seem to. But Elric is not simply a fighter. He's one of the most capable sorcerers of his day.

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

I'm aware of the etymology. I just remember there was a specific day on the WotC CharOps forum where someone said, "Hey, I have an idea! Let's start calling FMUs 'gishes'!" and I was like, "That's a terrible idea, please don't do that," but a significant number of people did it. I really hoped...

Why is the Gish so popular with players?

Why do we say gish? I remember the first time it was said on the old Character Optimization board and I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. It's a pointlessly opaque phrase, a shibboleth. It can also lead to funny situations with actual githyanki where you have gishes that aren't...

D&D General Are you aware that the New Edition (5.5 whatever) is a part of the 50th Anniversary of D&D?

It definitely was the New Coke of D&D. It was quite popular, but never managed to convince a lot of the core fans it was a proper replacement for the previous version. So they went back to something more similar to the previous form, with some modifications to make it a little like the New...

D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

Yehimal appears to be essentially unpopulated. Durpar entirely lacks any sense of ethnic diversity. Durpar, for instance, has an almost singular religion, with only a minority practicing typical Faerunian religion, and apparently, the entire country is focused otherwise on wealth. It doesn't...

D&D General Which medieval monsters are different then their dnd equivalent?

A hobgoblin was a house elf, typically depicted as a shapeshifter who was helpful but easily offended. "Hob" is just a nickname for Robert, so the name means "Bob goblin." The mythical hydra was truly immortal. Its last head had to be buried under a rock to prevent its regeneration. The...
