What RPG do you most regret parting with?

I'm not sentimental about vintage (or even specific) copies of old books I've loved, so I've reacquired almost everything I've regretted letting go. With the exceptions of Thri-Kreen of Athas, a mostly complete set of Shadowrun 3e, and... ironically... my Level Up kickstarter prizes. Waiting...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

Something to remember about Captain America, as a high-level martial, is that he's a lot more than just "peak human". A peak human is... peak at one thing, because there are tradeoffs, physiological compromises that must be made. He is not just as strong as Hafthor Bjornsson and as fast as Usain...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

I'd like to pair this with two house rules: Backgrounds don't grant proficiencies, Backgrounds are proficiencies. (Think Barbarians of Lemuria's Careers system.) The Expertise Dice from Level Up Advanced 5th Edition. Rogues, Rangers, and Bards start at +1d6; Rogues cap at +1d10.

    What is a "Narrative Mechanic"?

I'd argue that a narrative mechanic is any procedure within a game that bases the resolution-- of a conflict or a question-- on factors that are not intrinsic to actors/objects within the game world itself. A Paladin who does more damage when smiting creatures who are more offensive to their...

There are a lot of great works of literature that have aged like fine milk, not through any fault of their own, but because they are no longer capable of standing out from the crowd of their own poorest imitators. Tolkien, Howard, and most of Appendix N are among them.

    D&D 5E (2024) Should all races/lineages have +2/+1/+1 ASI?

Use Gritty, but then have the player roll 5d4 for each ability score (in order) and use the better of each score.

    D&D 5E (2024) Should all races/lineages have +2/+1/+1 ASI?

Whole point of racial ASIs was to mechanically differentiate one ancestry from another. If they're not going to be doing that anymore, there's no reason for them to continue existing.

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

The Psion class in 3.5 and PF1 (via Dreamscarred Press) has a default class spell list, and then additional spell lists that are (mostly) only accessible to their respective specialists. Make such specialization mandatory wherein each Wizard has one specialist school-- make other arcane...

    Unpopular opinions go here

The fact that any/every game can change, and should change, and must change if it is to remain relevant in the long term really has no bearing whatsoever on whether any specific change or any group of changes is good for the game or even better for the game than the rules they replaced...

If your character concept is that you're a halfling or a gnome that is the strongest warrior in the universe and you're upset that the rules don't let you, the rules are not the problem.

Man, I used to dream of getting in on the black market cheese trade. Never dreamed of eating the stuff.

    RPG Evolution: When Gamers Retire

I'm 43 and permanently disabled-- it's a laundry list-- so my efforts for the past 15-20 years or so have been directed more at starting a career (in the gaming industry) than getting ready to end one. Some of my regular players are also disabled and/or retired, but they also have busy family...

How Do You Like Your Extents of Progression?

I'd say that I prefer something in the range of competent to... well, way, way beyond "hero". Like, starting out in the general area of the first couple of seasons of Avatar, and progressing gently through most Chinese fantasy TV into Dragonball Z territory and... onwards.

    D&D 5E (2014) Brainstorming Wizard Subclasses

I very much like the idea of pairing the traditional... traditions (the Arcane Schools) with archetypes like the Bladesinger and the Warmage. In my current game, I'm pairing them with (upgunned) Warlock pact boons (not patrons) for much the same effect; this is mirrored by the wu jen combining a...

    Favorite superhero RPGs?

Make Mine MHR, but I've played around with Marvel Saga, Mutants & Masterminds, and EN World's own Four Color to Fantasy. I've determined that my usual preferences notwithstanding, when it comes to superheroes, I want a narrative-based system where superpowers do only "what they're supposed to...

Priming the Pump: Cortex Prime Primer for Prime Umpires

This, really really this, but I'd suggest that it's not that every mod or every combination of mods is rigorously playtested-- they're not-- it's just that every mechanic is made of the same parts as every other mechanic. The scale of traits is always between 1d4 and Xd12, the number of traits...

Priming the Pump: Cortex Prime Primer for Prime Umpires

Okay, so. Yes, when you're planning on running a Cortex game, you're not really thinking of running any Cortex game. You're either thinking of running one of the pre-published implementations-- I cut my teeth on Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, but I've played... one of the Firefly games... and a few...
