Going beyond humans in funny clothes?

When it comes to this subject, there are two books I always recommend: The Science of Aliens by Clifford Pickover, and Aliens and Alien Societies by Stanley Schmidt. You should be able to find or order both fairly easily. The latter is a writer's guide to the subject, but the former is very...

    The Trouble With Union

Yeah, and that's precisely what I wouldn't want. Union's main premise is brimming with potential, but the details need to be reworked. The whys and wherefores of how and why the inhabitants of Union are there needs to be reworked. Rystil Arden had a pretty cool idea above, for example.

    The Trouble With Union

I absolutely don't see how you could've gotten that kind of meaning out of that sentence. Let me put it like this: there are hundreds of other fantasy RPG cities out there, many if not most of them perfectly balanced for "realistic" play. The only real difference between Union and the average...

    The Trouble With Union

The thing is, there is something appealing about a city comprised of so many epic level characters. That's the trope that everything should be based around. Removing that basic assumption pretty much kills any chance of making Union different or unique. It just becomes another fantasy RPG city...

AD&D 2E Conan 2e Preview and Character Sheet

Yeah, no kidding. Plus, this border art looks much more appealing than the old. I'm not sure about the cover, though - Frazetta's rendition of the same scene invites a lot of negative comparisons.

    The Trouble With Union

OOF, why didn't I think of that?!?

    The Trouble With Union

In concept, Union should have been one of the most distinct, fascinating RPG cities ever. Perhaps the basic material could be reworked. Might make a cool fan project, but I doubt there's enough interest.

    The Trouble With Union

Yeah, "boring" is the best word for it, and should be anathema to any RPG city, especially an epic level D&D one. I wonder how it could be salvaged?

What nice things has a fellow EN Worlder done for you?

I think meeting you and having you show me and dragonlordofpoondari some really, really cool artifacts from D&D's early days rates up high on my list of cool things EN Worlders have done. I still think about those maps, especially that one with the ship beached near the underground temple...

Mongoose's New IP: Traveller is BACK

Like someone else mentioned, it may just be a play on words - it may be a new edition of Pendragon.

How would you do 3.5e in 160 pages?

    That seems reasonable to me.

How would you do 3.5e in 160 pages?

Like I said up above, saving space by giving up quick playability seems pointless in a project like this. I mean, I thought the point was to simplify the game, not just make it more easily portable in a physical way. Again, I think it would be better to cut the spells (and monsters) down to an...

How would you do 3.5e in 160 pages?

Sure, but I think that making a 160 page SRD would be more useful by winnowing down the spell list to those spells that are most common and useful, rather than coming up with a "roll your own" system. Saving space by sacrificing ease of use at the table wouldn't be a good idea, in my opinion...

How would you do 3.5e in 160 pages?

Those premade spells really speed up play. Ever play something like Ars Magica, where characters make up spells on the fly? Sounds cool in principle, can bring the game to a grinding halt in practice, especially if the spell is one that is complex in concept. That is, until the player comes up...

    The Trouble With Union

Actually, that would be a strong reason why I would like it. I'm not a fan of Planescape. Plus, I don't think the ELH really jacked up the power levels to ridiculous levels. In fact, I think the designers erred way too far on the safe side. They made epic level adventuring seem kind of mundane...

Mongoose's New IP: Traveller is BACK

That's an interesting take on it. Both games always struck me as quintessentially American, especially Traveller. Traveller especially, in large part due to the support it got in Dragon magazine in the early to mid 80s. Warhammer was the game I always saw as being the British RPG.

    Gamer lingo glossary

Same here. I mean, we used the term "huge ancient red dragon," but never thought of using the acronym. Maybe because we didn't really encounter them often enough for it to necessitate a shorthand way of referring to them.

Mongoose's New IP: Traveller is BACK

I posted this elsewhere, but I'll post it here as well. I'm not one of those who bash Mongoose relentlessly. Sure, they've produced some error-riddled books. But then they've redeemed themselves by producing a cool line like Conan. But this bit in the Traveller announcement caught my eye...

Rules Compendium - what do we expect?

I very, very much doubt anything from the PHB or DMG will be in there. They do make a point of using the word supplements, and given the other "Compendiums" have not included anything from the core books, I'd say we're only going to see material from the "Complete" series, environment books, and...
