    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Problem

Basically, the same thing as the "fighters are boring" complaint I made back on Page 3.

    Preferred tone of RPG text

I prefer the text to suit the situation/scenario it is describing. Lethal combat? Terse and #1 work best of the options. A duel? #3 works very well. Conversation? Always #2. Comedy situation? Make the text itself funny. If I'm laughing my butt off from reading how you wrote up a scenario...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Not entirely. You don't fully regain lost hit dice after a full rest. I have experience arguing with people in the DnD online community. I've learned that having a quick explanation that fits the rules mechanic is pretty much required -.- Eh, I would advise being careful in enforcing that...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

That works. I was also going with the idea they only recharge at a set rate. So when the batteries are much bigger because their bodies are used to holding much more of a charge, it takes longer to recharge naturally.

    Judgement calls vs "railroading"

Judgement call: "Decking the queen? In front of her entire army? Yeah, you're going to want this blank character sheet..." Railroading: "What's that? You want to explore that hamlet rather than continue to the city? Roll Constitution... Congrats! You survived the five hour beating a group of...

I know. I was extending the metaphor a bit ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Bwah? Why can't they just have been hit ten times for varying amounts of damage? Like Hit 1 is a bruise, Hit 2 a couple of broken bones, Hit 3 some stinging because of how light it was, Hit 4 chopped off their leg, and so on. Magic making them healthier would explain why a morningstar to the...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Personally, I prefer the idea of it being magic literally making you healthier. It's far easier to explain magical healing that way, as well as how the entire rest mechanic works. Plus how unrealistically fast characters heal...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

It's better to ask, "Are you expecting more newcomers to your game, or more buys from the established fanbase?" The question you asked could be honestly answered "experienced players" without telling you anything about if they're attracting new customers or not.

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

For how silly the wizard can be: The components and some of the descriptions of how the Fireball spell works have, in the past, made it sound like your wizard is flinging a flaming ball of poo at people. And then the ball explodes.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Problem

The problem with the Fighter isn't lack of combat utility. I've handed the PHB to the worst minmaxing munchkin I know and they would pick Fighter every single time whereas they normally pick something like wizard or cleric; the class is just too good on its own, and in the hands of someone who...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Well, considering the number of spells that work pretty much exactly as I described... I think it's a little late to talk about not silly :p

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Physics. Basically, due to the lives they take, their bodies are becoming saturated with magic that is subtly enhancing them. This is also why it is they pass out when they hit a certain low point in health; the magic that was keeping them going is exhausted and all of the physical...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

Yeah. "Stuff I Interpreted From Watching Them Do All Those Damned Kickstarters," ArchfiendBobbie, Miskatonic University Journal of Business, December 15th, 2016. (I hope you got a laugh.) Savage Worlds is actually a bit more complex. Take a good, long look at the rules for vehicle chases...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

I don't think this actually holds out anymore. Paizo, which pretty much is one of the complex system kings, repeatedly indicated even during their best years that they were not making that much profit for their game. They were trapped in having to rely on the more-expensive books to keep their...

D&D 5E (2014) Why Are Skeletons Weak To Bludgeoning Weapons?

Yeah, 3E made them DR5/Bludgeoning. 2E made skeletons take half damage from non-bludgeoning damage. Not certain about 1E. But, in general, skeletons have a long tradition of being weak to bludgeoning in DnD compared to other weapons.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Are Skeletons Weak To Bludgeoning Weapons?

It has to do with human biology. Basically, human bones tend to be easy to crush with blunt weapons. Animated skeletons even easier, since they don't have all of the skin, muscle, and fat to absorb the blow. And human bones don't necessarily age well outside of the body, depending on local...

D&D 5E (2014) Campaign for Beginners - Age of Worms? Shattered Gates of Slughtergarde?

Tomb of Horrors. I always recommend running newbies through it at least once, and it definitely fits the undead theme.

D&D 5E (2014) What sorts of things are you working on? (3PP or personal use homebrew)?

I'm currently trying to get my mecha rules up and running for 5E. Unfortunately, every time I think I've got them somewhat decent, someone breaks something.
