The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

That's because they don't work. Even such capitalism-friendly nations as the United States don't practice true capitalism for exactly that reason, due to learning that lesson the hard way. The U.S. economy, for example, is more of a socialism-capitalism hybrid. So, really, no one knows how...

D&D 5E (2014) How do players know they are in the "wrong" location in a sandbox campaign?

How my players are supposed to find out: A simple wisdom check, or maybe ask one of the dozens of people you've passed on the road. How my players usually find out: "Uh, guys, I think this dracolich/great wyrm/physical god is actually real, and maybe we shouldn't have attacked it..."

2 questions regarding a "linear" campaign

Depends on the dungeon and who's following me. A horde of still-living monsters can make arresting me for accidentally blowing up Neverwinter pretty hard to accomplish...

2 questions regarding a "linear" campaign

Don't be afraid to put the pieces in weird or unusual locations, or even offer distractions to the players. Maybe they pass a drow carnival on the way to collect the next piece? That sight alone should be unusual enough to keep them distracted for a session or two. But make it clear that while...

How should a GM handle refused plots

I've actually been in the kind of situation where a GM forced a plot on us. In my case, my character was prophesied that the person she married would become the Herald of Pelor... and the villain we were trying to stop was a succubus sorcerer who was prophesied to gain great power if she married...

The Dilemma of the Simple RPG

I think, increasingly, people are getting the idea that simplicity is a good thing... and publishers are going to have to accept that diversification is their ticket to success. This isn't the days of 1E, 2E, or 3E where you can build a system that requires its own library just to house the...

Starfinder Here's the cover of INCIDENT AT ABSALOM STATION, the first adventure in Starfinder's DEAD SUNS AP!

Brevity is often mistaken for failed wit. That is because the phrase "brevity is the soul of wit" is a fallacy, but one that pervades societal subconscious. Thus, it causes miscommunications. There... is actually the theory that much of what they are doing with Starfinder is precisely because...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana:Are they revealing limitations in the 5th edition system?

I think what we're seeing are the limits of the design philosophy behind 5E. As far as mechanics go, I don't think they've even begun to stretch the system yet.

D&D 5E (2014) I might have bitten off more than I can chew

I am still paying attention to this thread. Just been busy a bit with life. I think I generally have an idea for how this will function. It's going to be interesting to write it up. I should have something posted this weekend. Just dealing with a bit of life at the moment.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

Get some minions that create a retirement home that specializes in longer-lived races. Let it run for awhile without culling any of the residents to build up a good reputation. Then imagine the look on a player's face when they hear that "Pelor's House of Elderly Care" is actually an Alhoon's...

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

I just checked and, welp... Time for me to go drinking. That is a copyright nightmare I want to erase from my memory.

D&D 5E (2014) I might have bitten off more than I can chew

I'm definitely considering the suggestions so far. One aspect that will be in place, looking at them: Maintenance. If you're going to own a giant pilotable golem, you're going to pay money to keep the thing functioning. It'll make them a nice gold sink for higher-level players, and will make...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why a New D&D Video Game Should Be 16bit/2D

We could go in a fun direction and let the community decide how much game should be funded. Get developer like Harebrained Schemes to Kickstarter it. Then, if the community wants a game with a budget in the millions, they'll make it happen. Hasbro doesn't have to spend a dime on development...

D&D 5E (2014) I might have bitten off more than I can chew

The mechs themselves are rare. They're remnants of a former civilization. Their purpose is completely unknown. And when found, every single one starts in a state of serious disrepair. They've not been used or maintained in centuries, and they show it. Edit: To help a bit... Most people don't...

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Oh, my group doesn't have it easy. Take a look at some of my posts on the Let's Read thread for Volo's. Devious encounters by intelligent creatures are common

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Just be careful, as you can easily TPK a party if you don't take into account the lack of darkvision and adjust tactics accordingly.

D&D 5E (2014) Eliminating darkvision from most races

Keep in mind they cannot see in color with Darkvision either. Then color-code a dungeon. And make certain one color indicates traps. They will carry lights with them forever after.
