D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I’ve discussed how stuff showed up in the notes/prep when there were questions about outcomes or procedures (and occasionally via “what would’ve happened if..” type stuff), but never entire notes for a more traditionally prepped segment. Session notes summarizing what I think happened, sure.

While they do point out the list of games that serve as an inspiration is not 100%, Masks&City of Mist are called out in there as well. The latter in particular is a more "modern" take on some sort of heroic fantasy by way of PBTA and has some "story intrusion" mechanics. I can't speak to exact...

I mean the core expectation is GM crafted narrative arcs! It’s very much written to be “situation not plot” story play. You can easily move it towards something more “play to find out-ish” by bringing in Fronts and such; but the starting default seems to be “5e CR style narrative/“RP” focused...

A GM move is everything you do as a GM. I think there’s also a bit of a split how you handle Fear generation explicitly for intrusions/triggers in combat and in a more general sense in the flow of play. Sometimes Taking a fear is enough, sometimes you may want to do more. It’s definitely more...

Yeah the metacurrency stuff can be enough (tick a stress, take disadvantage forward to follow up, whatever); and then bringing in clocks countdowns can be another easy way to do a low-effort “you get what you want but I’m complicating things.”

The indie scene in general is excellent about calling out inspirations both media and game wise. It’s wonderful to see what inspires people to make a game.

There’s a long discussion on 154+ about using fear, and narrative stuff under Making Moves on 149 with explicit ideas on “how to choose a move” on 150 that has the various roll outcomes.

They credit the game and designer who originated the specific PBTA Agenda and Principles ethos, they take nothing from DW. The credits and “inspired by” portion is remarkably detailed and helps point people towards other games if they really find some element engaging.

I think the campaign frames cover this pretty extensively? See: motherboards paragraph on changing all magic to tech. A shoutout here would’ve been good if missing tho.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Would it? I assure you for a HMTW game it absolutely does not. Again, I read so many of your posts and I’m struck over and over at how you’re a poster child for the sort of “D&D conservatism” the OP identified. Almost nothing you post comports to the sort of experiences and play that I’ve...

A wonderful anime that indulges and subverts a lot of JRPG tropes; which are of course deeply descended from early D&D tropes as well. Edit: while also reckoning with what it really means for Elves to be functionally immortal in a way that few media do. I would say that doing this is in fact a...

One of my favorite pieces of advice from His Majesty the Worm is to just give your players the dungeon map. Sure, keep off secret rooms and keyed details - but the map itself doesn’t really matter unless you have a player that delights in mapping. What matters is the creativity and conversation...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I find it interesting that D&D 2024, Daggerheart , and some of the other Heartbreakers that have come out/are in beta advocate more significantly for scene framing/montages and skipping past stuff the table doesn’t want to spend time on. Did I already mention that Frieren is a master class in...

How did we go from “5e is the dominant force in the market currently so we should assume their definitions” to “well but actually we can’t use their definitions and framing for things because [reasons].” Edit: just to be clear, when you say “encounter” to me as somebody who came up from the 5e...

Miro and Discord, I have no issues taking whatever numbers my players tell me and considering how often they go “bad news guys, I got a 2 there” it seems to be working well!

I’m debating doing a Blades style inventory system where players just mark a Loadout that I can use for fictional positioning (eg: climbing with a heavy load would probably carry disadvantage), and then mark basic adventuring stuff off as they need it.

We played the beta oneshot in Miro, which is where I run all my other more narrative games and have run OSE/Dolmenwood as well. I like the ability to quickly draw rough maps (works great with games where you just need relative positioning for same-paging), see everybody’s sheets constantly...

Critical Role to Run Grimdark Daggerheart Miniseries

Multiple people here have stated over and over that the Ageof Umbra frame isn’t “grimdark” despite what the article says. Heck, it’s not dissimilar in overall vibe (perhaps even more hopeful) to The One Ring. A bleak high fantasy world that asks if you’ll be the ones to fully rekindle hope.
