The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

Actually now that you brought the Jane Austin books up I think those would be better served using improv theater. Personally I have not seen any rule set that does social interaction justice. I have not seen either of the 4e DM's so can't comment on the skill challenge system. I must clear...

The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

No. The race is a form of conflict (I think you missed my earlier post). Since it is a key type of physical conflict in that game, it needs rules to resolve it. I will admit to having changed my mind of say combat to any major repeated physical conflict.

The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

My stance is not carved in stone, other wise I would not ask for input. Think action movie (not drama, or romance ect), would a action movie about baking cakes work? Would you put detailed scenes about baking in one? Now would you leave out actions scenes from "Dirty Dozen"? Are they...

The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

Yes that would diffidently be better then my original effort to state the question. And yes the 'rigger' rules where close to the cyber rules but where easier to integrate into normal combat.

    Tracking Combat (Monster Cards?)

I use a program call DM Familiar which allows me to connect to DDI and import and display the stat blocks. There 2 major draw backs. One you must have a DDI subscription to use this feature and second you must have an internet connection where you setup. The program does not store the stat...

The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

I would love to see such a game but the closest I have seen are Carwars and take off from Speed Racer that had combat, but point taken. Maybe it would be more accurate to replace combat with physical conflict? In most games that is combat but in your example it would be the actual racing. (Of...

The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

Man, I knew I don't convey what I mean very well sometimes, but I was really off the mark this time. First I don't mean to imply that other rules are not wanted. Combat rules normally are the largest section in an rule I have played for several reasons. 1) Combat is the most detail action in...

    Siloing: Good or Bad?

First let me say that my response was bad manners and let me apologize to Derren and the board. Now back on the original subject: I don't think siloing in 4e means the game is meant to be are is any more combat heavy in design then 1e or 2e. It might not be your style but I personally don't...

The importance of non combat rules in a RPG.

While having a discusion in another tread (http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/269550-siloing-good-bad-3.html) I read this quote: At first I simply wanted to have a clearer ideal of what he meant. When I asked responded with the following: Now my first response is that of...

    Siloing: Good or Bad?

The only rules a RPG needs are COMBAT every thing can be fudge a lot easier. Movement and special actions are the next most useful. Well since a game has x=social skills it equal nothing because lots of groups don't use social interaction rules. (See debate on why role v.s. roll play...

Which 16 array would you recomend

You need to read more carefully. Part of the reason on toning down the stats a bit was to assist me in running balanced encounters. I had no intentions on preventing or discouraging any character type. I came here because previous experience and shown that stats over 16 are close to being a...

D&D Video Gaming News - Hasbro sues for breach of contact by Atari

I did not say they where great con's just cons. All of my CRPG friends would at least take a close look if it was D&D, but for the rest I will bend your superior knowlage (I will admit I have not really like CRPG's since Azurebonds.

Our varied play experiences -- then and now

What I have seen is that the net has allowed a greater flow of ideals and approaches to the game while the same time giving players a greater choice on who the play with. The internet has made learning of finding a new more compatible group easier. Players are more aware of different styles...

    Siloing: Good or Bad?

After all the fighting/debates over the 3.x rule set over the use of social skills being wrong/right. The non use of non combat skills. Players saying that the only good thing about humans is 1 extra feat unless you where a rogue, I don't thing 4e lost of those rules really hurt that style of...

D&D Video Gaming News - Hasbro sues for breach of contact by Atari

Advantages of 4e for online world are: Name/Brand recognition. Per developed worlds. A large PC game fan base. A fully developed combat system start with. Few if any very difficult spells to program. If the game can be designed close enough to the PnP version you will have a large group of...

    Pacing & daily powers/surges

To the OP I would go with the book until I got a hang of how it affects your campaign. These posters really have a wide verity of playing styles. My is even worst. I can go several game weeks with out combat or just one per week, the boom out of now where there are 5 or even 6 in one day. It...

Which 16 array would you recomend

My house rule for rolling is a hybrid. I let each player roll a set. wrote them all done the party picked one set. That set became the standard array for the campaign. It meant that each campaign had a different power level and challenges.

    DnD on Microsoft Surface Update

Or how about landscaping, crowd control, route planning. With GPS devices tracking of races like marathons, cross county skiing or hiking? Any thing that requires multiple people to look, discus, and or minutiae it at the same time or as a group could use these.

After reading all of this and a couple of other treads I am just going to use the above approach. It will some getting use wanting a party where everyone as an 18 or 20. ~30 years of gaming and must break out of high stats are game breaker mod.
