Were the 80s really the Golden Age of D&D?

I want to point out this Market Research was for the US, not any where else. The the 2.25 active gamers in the survey where all in the US. This does not give us a clear picture of Europe or any where else. It also gives us an possible reason that common toy stores and department stores don't...

Moving towards no minis in 4e combat

Just be sure you don't have one of the rare gamers (like me) who can't keep a mental picture of the battle field in their head. I always get confused by the end of the second round. Lots of time by the end of the first. I don't know how common we are but there are some like me.

How much does the system matter?

I will say first I know I am bad at writing poll questions but I did not mean to imply that a bad system would not destroy the fun for any one. I think I should have made it clearer that the system had to be one that you at least could play but did not really like. I can play several systems...

Too young to play D&D 4e

I think I need to add something. One reason my daughter had to wait was because she was the only kid in the group close to her age and she was the oldest by at least 4 years. So when she started it was in my normal group that I and DM ran. It was not changed to fit her in any way. So when...

    D&D 4E Running 4E combats quickly

I have used both of these methods and they work great. for cards, my wife created a word document the printed out the PC cards with all of the important information on them. I just reprinted them on a sheet of 3x5 cards as needed. I would also fill the rest of the sheet with the monsters...

Were the 80s really the Golden Age of D&D?

After reading all of these post and a few articles on the meaning of "Golden Age" I would just have to say the whole concept is wrong and there is no such thing. People and things normally evolve slowing and that is just what happened to RPGs. I really don't thing any time was better then what...

Too young to play D&D 4e

I have been thinking and reading the previous post. Here is another suggestion. Find a simple system, like a updated version of 1 or 2 ed D&D or Fantasy Trip. Simple rules that don't have to many options are just find for a young child. Some thing that could be migrated to a more complex...

Too young to play D&D 4e

I had my daughter wait until she was about 12 to start. There are lots of things about a game that most of us just don't think about. Lots of it just require a more mature brain to track. On the other hand we started story telling (i.e. non system type role playing earlier.) What if's or...

How much does the system matter?

Thanks for all of the replies. While I have played in more then ten groups over the last 30 years, I never got into the con or large social aspect of the game. (Most changes in groups was due to change of station ordered by the Army.) This helps put a lot of the statements and conflict over...

How close to the RAW did/do you play AD&D1?

I agree, that is why I said that it was likely that 80% or more just ignored this part of the rules. It really did not add any thing. Heck we house ruled the different scales as soon as some one actual figured it. That took a few months and we were all in our twenty's when AD&D 1ed came out.

How close to the RAW did/do you play AD&D1?

Right all part of the old table top system where every thing was done by rulers or tape measure. The grid system was 2nd edition.

How close to the RAW did/do you play AD&D1?

The one rule I notice that almost every one dropped was the movement rule that required you to actually measure the distance your figurine moved. (For you who don't remember: all of the movement rates where written in inches for table top/miniature combat.) It was an hold over from the...

What editions are preferred by people who vote in polls?

I vote but I play in both systems. I also would like to play in others too if I could find a group that did.

Familiar - D&D 4e combat tracking program for DMs

I am trying to use it now. I have the load monster screen up and am trying to use the compendium. The web page you have it go to is not letting me log in. I know it is not the compendium because I have it open on a different computer and that one. My question is how do I find the number for...

What adventure module defines D&D to you?

I second this. We have never liked any of the modules.

How much does the system matter?

Yea, this is the info I was aiming for but could not figure out how to word the poll.

How much does the system matter?

With all of the like/dislike treads a related question came to my mind. Assuming the system is one that you can tolerate but don't necessary like, how much impact does it have on your enjoyment? Does a good group make a big difference or does the system get in the way? (Note I am assuming...

Were the 80s really the Golden Age of D&D?

So you are saying that you don't believe that about 1/10 of 1% of the world population plays some type of RPG. Any thing from D&D to a Germany or one printed in India? That would make only 308,059 players in the US of all ages, and games. Ok lets triple that to show a US bias over places like...

    alternate 3E dual-classing idea...

It only gives about a 10 to 15% boost in power. The action limitation keeps the party from being more powerful. What is does do is to give the party a lot more staying power over a long combat and/or the ability to have more encounters per day. I also helps but does not end the problem of...

What editions are preferred by loyalists?

A more meaningful poll would be how important is a system to you? I want to find a 4e group but have joined a 3e group. I enjoy the group and the game but don't really care for the rule set. For me in this case the group and game is far more important. There are only a small number of games...
