Strong disagree here. I think PB being a single value reflecting a character's overall competency which then applies to their class specific abilities was one of the better innovations of 5E.

There was a Dragon magazine article around 1983 that had class-based damage for AD&D. College-age me thought it was pretty cool, especially since it eliminated the weird "blunt weapons only" for clerics. Nowadays, not so much. I was intrigued by the weapon special properties that popped up...
