D&D 5E (2014) Detect Thoughts and Dream Combo

So, as others have pointed out, the plan as outlined is not possible. You can't cast Detect Thoughts while in a dream trance. If you have an accomplice, you can put them in the Dream trance, and then cast Detect Thoughts. If the targeted player made his save against that spell, I would say that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bag of Holding Question

Hmm - I'd read that as referring to the exterior dimensions. It's actually very ambiguously worded. Oh well, I don't care. I'm still going to let them shove 10 ft poles in there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bag of Holding Question

I'm pretty broad-shouldered, but would still have sufficient clearance to squeeze armour in my size in, I think. I wouldn't fuss about that as DM. Unless I was in a really bad mood. As for the depth, I think you're not really grasping the concept of 'larger on the inside than the outside'.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bag of Holding Question

That's the exterior space. It's bigger inside. That's the whole point! Polearms and multiple suits of armour are fine.

Rules FAQ How Does Multiclassing Work in D&D 5E?

Do you know, I actually totally overlooked the fact that the minimums apply to your original class, as well as the new one. You made me go and look to check if any of my players had been pulling a fast one. Thankfully, it seems they know the multiclassing rules even if I don't!

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

Similarly, I rule that a party always knows where the ranger is as long as they are within their favoured terrain. After all, if we don't know where someone is, we could possibly describe that person as lost. 'Unable to be found' is a dictionary definition of 'lost', after all. Unfortunately...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Don't We Simplify 5e?

You can do short and snappy spell descriptions that are much more precise that Thom's example, though. This is the full description of Sleep in 5 Torches Deep: "2HD/level worth of targets in 30’ fall asleep. Attack. 8 hrs" All the spells are like that, and it means all 60 spells in the core...

In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Sorry, we're full. I'll put up a note if we have people start dropping out.

    D&D 5E (2014) Which played-out D&D trope needs to die?

Jesus - I'm thinking you people would not like most of my games! I'd write more, but I'm busy figuring out ways for these adventurers in a tavern to learn about the cosmic threat posed by the evil cultists' plot to open a portal to hell.

Anyone in the market for a new house?

At first I thought 'What? Cheap?!'. But then I did a little bit of converting and realised it's only a little over triple what we paid for our 800 sq ft apartment....

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Don't We Simplify 5e?

Harking back to an old post here, but this is a very uncharitable way of looking at it. Handing out pregens to new players is not calling them dumb. It's not forcing them to go through a tedious process of preparation before they can actually play and find out if they like the game. None of my...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sacred Cows: Ability Scores

In principle I like ability draining ideas. But in practice taking ability score damage means rewriting a whole bunch on numbers on your sheet, and then changing them all back when you heal. It gets annoying.

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

I don't really care if you would find it sparse. People play that way. :D

D&D 5E (2014) Rogue's Cunning Action to Hide: In Combat??

I don't think it's that complicated a situation to rule on. I drew some beautiful art to illustrate. In scenario 1, on the left, Dave the rogue is hidden. He pops out from hiding and shoots the big scary monster, getting his sneak attack damage. Then he pops back behind to pillar and uses his...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

A game of pure combat sounds umnplayable to me. Combat in DnD is not that good - I'd play Mordheim or something if that's what I wanted to do. You need to context to make combat worthwhile. A session which was almost all combat would be okay. We did have a session recently in the game I play in...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

More's the point, by the time you've finished searching the fifteenth corridor you've already burned through all your resources on wandering monsters, and it's irrelevant anyway since the evil ritual was completed an hour ago and the world's already doomed. Maybe I've missed the point of this...
