D&D 5E (2014) Mechanics you don't want to see, ever

"Regardless, it's still my character and does NOT become an NPC; and I can still play it in the background even if it does leave the party (e.g. secretly follows the party anyway)." You can absolutely play that character in the background... at some other table. Just go get some other GM to run...

D&D 5E (2014) Mechanics you don't want to see, ever

I think it's not an issue that one example can prove. 10th to 14th is a five level range where you are all into super levels. So to me it's not surprising that it works well enough in some cases. But by even CR 12 you have 9th level spells possible in the adversary and the odds of the 10th level...

When another player builds a clone of your character.

Usualky one of several things is true... We as players are sharing info about our chargen and can coordinate to avoid problems. It doesnt mean no cases of same base but we add more distinctive differences outside of class race etc. The GM is collecting characters individually and they are...

D&D 5E (2014) Invisible Objects and Spell Effects under RAW

Invisible means cannot be seen. So if your observer is trying to find it by sight alone, that fails unless there is reason. As for DC, it would vary as to specifics. Is your invisible mug on a table in the rain? Is it in sn old room with dust? A lot of bugs? Breeze blowing stuff? It all matters.

    D&D 5E (2014) Charisma Conundrum

Thanks for the analysis, it pretty much backs up my expectations. A few points... As noted, given the issue raised was to create a non-vacuum example, I chose to skip Familiar as a choice due to not knowing the material component availability at low levels. So, I prioritized no-material or...

D&D 5E (2014) Why everyone think that Battlemaster is better than Samurai?

The Xanathar dub-vlass points me to educated warrior and nobleman, almost the sort of classic "adventurer trope" of Verne and Burrows - courtly and deadly.

D&D 5E (2024) What Improvements Would You Want with 6E?

That depends on if you consider level 1 to be start adventuring or later training. A potter setting would fit yo be an adventures hspprn while still in school. I would have tier- 1 be "in school" centered and tier-2 be " graduated" and more the classic adventure. But it's a given, status in...

D&D 5E (2014) Cost of Attending Wizard School

On the original post, in my games, I tend to work it in reverse. The debt is in time and tight. Casters are not do common that its competition to get in but rather competition to find them. So, once one is found, they trained for free or possibly bribed and bought - with contract for extended...

D&D 5E (2024) What Improvements Would You Want with 6E?

If I were gonna try and emulate Potter in 5e. Spell point variant wizard. Plus status (years) in a Wizard school as background feature. Boons (charms, spellbooks, resources like special familiars, etc) from the school due to status. As status rises, more boons.) Basically a lot needs to be...

D&D 5E (2024) What Improvements Would You Want with 6E?

Honestly, four charisma classes is a bit out of whack - bard, sorc, warlock and paladin. Really how hard us it to not see twelve classes, six abilities and fail to suggest "hey, what if it was two classes for each ability" and then have sub-classes that hit other secondaries? Just one example...

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

Expertise. Which skills you chose determines which pillar(s) it applies to. But really most every character design makes you choose- from race to background to class to ability scores.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

No, not at all. Every class feature is part of the whole package. The extra asi/feats are there to give choices. Viewing those as combat features not flexible choices is not rational because they can be either. I mean, it's obviously about trade-offs. The rogue starts with more skil and...

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

At this point, that just clearly doesnt make sense. Thisxseems yo now get round yo "but if I choose to not see this class feature as non-combat option".

D&D General What “hit points” is?

Nope, at least for me, it's a loss of sanity points. Hit points is a part of a workable system for dudhing out a combat resolution that produces a certain cinematic style.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

As many have said, extra feats means extra opportunities to take non-combat stuff. If you dont use feats, then that's extra ASI for extra bonuses to other skills. I worked a half-elf samurai the other day. Two skill from half-elf, teo from fighter, two plus 2 tools from background. Elven...

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

Nobody is saying that only martial chsrscters get backgrounds. So, not sure anyone needs that forgiveness so generously offered.

Meaning those resources were not useful for those early levels in the warlock case but were for the wizard.

    D&D 5E (2014) Charisma Conundrum

So when we talk about "early on" or tier-1 or front loaded or before 5th or whatever... we are really talking about level 3 - maybe 4 too? The superiority of the tomelock at lower levels before the wizard gets the good spells is a level bump issue? Uh huh. OK.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

In 5e you do not play a class. You play a character. Thst includes a race, a background and a class. None of these is "balancced" in isolation. They are meant to be a package. Had 5e been designed with no backgrounds, it's highly likely there would be more skills options embedded into the...
