[Rules] Does character property stay with you forever?

If you're playing in Adventure League, then you can keep all magic items. Other items are usually re-bought at the beginning of a module (because it's too much trouble to record them all).

Making ability scores more about the character concept.

I don't really like houseruling too much, so I handle it with the tools I have at hand. For example one of my players wants to play an intelligent fighter. Then he might not have the highest to-hit and damage in combat, but there are various benefits from being intelligent: Might be able to...

"Theater of the Mind" or Map and Minis?

Count me in on the "I voted Other because I make it depend on battle". Switching between theater of mind and grid-based seems the most fun and keeps days with many battle more interesting too. Theater of mind also allows various interesting variations ranging from only keeping track of the...

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

Yes, it's rounding up, but that's the official rule. If you check the basic rules for each class you see: As you can see the basic rules allow you to roll 1d8 or take 5. Also if you play AL, you actually HAVE to take the fixed value defined here, you are not allowed to roll for it:

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

There's actually an official rule for average HP rather than rolling. That would be 1d4 becomes 3, 1d6 becomes 4, 1d8 becomes 5, 1d10 becomes 6 and 1d12 becomes 7.

    Diagonal area of spells

I'm usually not so strict when it comes to AoE as long as my player gives a reasonable explanation. Often my players just ask me: "Can I do it so the fireball spell hits Monster A and Monster B, but not PC A?" and then I just say "Yes" (or sometimes "No, but...") and problem solved.

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

Nothing, really. In fact, I rather try to get the party killed instead. But here is a few points of note: - I usually don't make my party face encounters that are impossible to win, if they try to enter an area that's too hard for them, I give subtle warnings like "You have a bad feeling about...

To MAX HP or not to MAX HP

If you ask me, MaxHP is a bad idea. Makes combat rather boring. I let my players roll for MaxHP increase. I honestly don't think it makes much of a difference that it's random. Your healing potential from hit dice is always the same regardless of what your MaxHP is and it's very unlikely that a...

Have you ever intentionally ignored a character aspect?

The only time I'd do that is if I roleplay a certain character and the aspect doesn't fit to his personality. For example I might play a cleric that prefers to wear robes and daggers.

If you could only play one---

I have an RP character that I always play in any MMORPG and his background story is basically that he is a very young tomboy god. He is agile, likes to use daggers and has holy and healing powers and later evolves into a sword dancer, moving swords with telekinesis. Of course that cannot be...

D&D 5E (2014) As a DM what spell / ability do you find most annoying?

What? That's like the best spell for me because the more items identified, the less I have to secretly keep track of what item is what.

    DM Shortage?

I picked "Other". I'm mostly playing online and there it's quite visible how many DMs are available and how many players want to join an adventure. What I noticed here is that there's a shortage of DMs that want to DM the official adventure paths, but there plenty of DMs that are heavy on the...

    Bashing bags of hitpoints

My level 5 4-PC group can actually defeat a 70 HP monster in a single round. Sometimes even without spending any resources! Anyway I kind of like high HP and low AC because my players seem to have a lot more fun if they hit most of the time compared to missing half the time. Edit: Oh yeah...

What are the DM's obligations of disclosure for sensitive game material? What is "sensitive" game material?

I would never go ahead and give out warnings on content (too spoilery anyway, and as discussed above, triggers are very context sensitive, so a person probably couldn't even tell ahead of time that something will bother him/her), but I definitely will listen if a player approaches me and tells...

D&D 5E (2014) As a DM what spell / ability do you find most annoying?

All those spells that let the party safely take rests. That kinda makes it hard for me to create reasonable scenarios with limited resting.

    D&D 5E (2014) So Why is 5E So Popular?

For me it was mainly: 1. It is easy to learn and get started. 2. The basic rules are available for free.

D&D 5E (2014) How Many Dragon Fights Have You Had in D&D 5e?

None so far actually! My LMoP group died before they ran into the prominent dragon. Now playing PotA and my group is currently dangerously close to a forest inhabited by a dragon, but since one of my players rolled 20+ on his survival check, I already warned him that it might not be the best...

How do you handle Rogue (Assassins)?

Okay, so let me collect my thoughts on this. So I think that this "Surprise" ability is something that happens very rarely. Normally it requires ALL party members to succeed their stealth roll, plus the rogue rolling higher initiative than the enemy. So yeah I see that the rogue could be like...

D&D 5E (2014) PotA The Long Road Side Track Lore Question

I like the idea of explaining it via Waterdeep being too government driven for their taste.

D&D 5E (2014) PotA The Long Road Side Track Lore Question

One of my players is quite interesting in the D&D lore and keeps asking me questions I have a hard time to answer. So before I tell him I don't know, I would like to see if anyone here has an idea about these things (Warning: PoTA side track spoilers): The module says "They hire the characters...
