D&D 5E (2014) Has anyone ever been part of a group that has booted the DM?

I don't want to brag but I've always been the DM and nope.

    D&D 5E (2014) Giant Ant

Ants have pretty bad sight, but they definitely work with sight. They use it to memorize landmarks to know the way on a path they've traveled before. When they first walk a path they rarely use sight but instead use their antennae to follow chemical trails. But at the same time the memorization...

D&D 5E (2014) Book of Ancient Secrets and Spell Scroll

Obviously specific beats general, but the specific rule does not say that there's no chance of failure, it doesn't actually refer to spell scrolls at all.

D&D 5E (2014) Book of Ancient Secrets and Spell Scroll

With Book of Ancient Secrets a Warlock can copy any ritual spell he finds. What if the spell he finds is on a spell scroll? Does the general rule for copying a spell from a spell scroll still apply? Or can Warlocks copy the spells to 100%, because the invocation doesn't mention failure?

    D&D 5E (2014) Action Types - Rules As Written

The intention of the vague rules is that the DM decides what to do based on what's most fun for your group. If talking during combat improves the group's experience, allow it. If you feel like the urgency is lost in combat because your players discuss for 5 minutes about their strategy every...

D&D 5E (2014) New born hatchling of a DM starting his first campaign in epic proportions! XD

The thread title is like a red flag to me. "New DM + Make Epic campaign = Uh Oh" I alctually feel it's better to start DMing using an existing campaign first. Lost Mine of Phandelver is really good for learning to DM. But if it has to be your own campaign, then I agree with the others who said...

D&D 5E (2014) How much range is enough?

Why does it not happen on land travel though? For example your adventurers travel on a plain. You roll random encounters, result is 3 Gnolls. What do you do? What I usually do is: I tell the playes they notice some creatures at 600ft distance and ask them what they want to do. Now the result...

D&D 5E (2014) How much range is enough?

High range is important occassionally in my game in field encounters. If there are monsters that have a 600ft attack range on an open field, then they will start attacking the PCs at that range. This means there can be several rounds until the PCs can even fight back.

    D&D 5E (2014) Monk Jump Distance

Might not be realistic, but at least it gives an extra use to the STR stat. If one of my players makes his character particularly good at one thing, I always try to reward it by making checks in that regard (or determine auto-success). Likewise, if a players makes his character particularly bad...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knocked out while Flying

Well, dropping concentration is free and it's always good to give players a choice.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you like a 5e video game akin to Neverwinter Nights & Neverwinter Nights 2?

I never played NWN, but I still want to say that I'd like to see a D&D 5e video game with combat by-the-rules (turn-based, not real time). I don't really need an editor / possibility to DM. Instead I want a story on par with the official adventure paths as well as the possibility to play with...

D&D 5E (2014) Where did the 6-8 encounter standard come from?

Hmm, I don't know about you guys, but when I play out the official APs, I definitely have most playing time in dungeons. Yeah, there are times where the group is in town for a day. But I just don't put ANY encounters on that day, so short rest long rest balance doesn't matter in the first place...

D&D 5E (2014) Where did the 6-8 encounter standard come from?

I think it comes from the adventure paths. Each chapter / section has around 6-8 encounters. If you only took long rests in between the sections, you end up pretty often with 6-8 encounters per day. Could also be that they simply tried out what setup makes all the classes balanced and concluded...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you specifically want out of reviewers?

The "finding a reviewer that has the same taste as me" approach does not work for D&D imo as just to determine how good a certain AP is you need months of time. Consequently I think objective facts are more important here. It's different for say, taste in music. I can quickly listen to music...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you specifically want out of reviewers?

If I read campaign reviews, I'm mostly interested in how easy the campaign is to DM.

    D&D 5E (2014) Group Rule Deal-Breakers

I generally don't like house rules or custom campaigns. I actually prefer games of the strictness of AL.

D&D 5E (2014) Reach weaon and opportunity attack

No, that's correct. If you have a reach weapon the area in which an opponent can move is larger as the OA only happens after leaving the 10ft radius. However, at the same time your area of control is also larger, so it can be situational. Reach weapons are particularly bad against ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) Forget about the treasure and pricing system of 5E!

I'd say the one creating the AP is the one that creates what players see. That's not necessarily the DM, even though in many cases the DM might also be the AP creator. Not in my case, because I only run official APs, though. And if that store in that town says "He offers [list of items] in his...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running Death House one-shot

I instill fear to my players by telling them that if their character dies and they have to create a new one, it starts from scratch again. :p

D&D 5E (2014) Forget about the treasure and pricing system of 5E!

A DM only narrates what players see, he has no influence on what they do or what stores offer. If anything it's the player's failing because I see coming up with what to do as their task.
