D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

At 11th level, a 20 INT wizard's high level slots are 1x6, 2x5, and 3x4. A duelist Fighter, with a +1 sword, against 17 AC, such as a Behir, is expected to do as much damage each round as the wizard casting Blight against an enemy with +4 to save, such as that same Behir. A Samurai's Action...

D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

I much prefer large dungeons where parties can engage at will, and every time they leave the dungeon and long rest, I partially restock, set up traps, have the monsters plan ambushes, etc. This leaves it to them to simply try and clear as much as they possibly can before a long rest.

Half the fun is rolling, looking at the die, then asking the druid, "What's your AC?" knowing that it sure as hell isn't 29.

    D&D 5E (2014) sleep vs tasha's laughter

Neither spell is good at 6th level. THL will often just waste a spell slot, and since multiattacking is now online, you're looking at best at a single round's worth of action denial. Sleep will only work on minions or nearly-dead higher-level monsters.

D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

"Everything gets better after a nap and perhaps slap in the face by the Paladin." It's not too hard to kill 5e characters if you put your back into it. Harder than 1e, sure, but in my Temple of Elemental Evil campaign, I killed about 15. What's really hard is imposing any kind of debilitating...

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

PF2 is, for all intents and purposes, a brand new game. New things usually have lots of things wrong with them that need to go through a revision or two.

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

This is the relevant part to me. Usually when this happens, only good things follow.

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Who knows? P2 content outranks P1 content on Amazon, so my guess is the bulk of it is P2 now. FG and Roll20 both show P2 is about equally popular with P1 now, and since P1 players probably aren't buying new core rulebooks, that's a second suggestive piece of information.

    I believe ICV2 lumps PF1 and PF2 together.

D&D General Things That Bug You

Knocking something prone is a slick move when you have at least two people in melee against an opponent with a fair amount of HP. It also forces the enemy to choose between using an action to break the hold or attacking with disadvantage.

D&D General Things That Bug You

I agree. My go-to positive example is the Rogue. He's what I consider a fairly good DEX-based character design. His skills & saves are badass. But he's pretty squishy, a fair bit easier to hit, somewhat limited in his choice of targets, crumples if he gets multiattacked, and his offensive damage...

D&D General Things That Bug You

Yeah, I hate the "DEX as god stat" thing, but it has little to do with unarmored AC and a lot to do with the tradeoffs being tiny in terms of armored AC and weapon damage. The only thing a rapier-using sword-and-board Fighter loses is a point of AC and the effective use of hand axes, while...

D&D General Things That Bug You

High DEX doesn't stop you from wearing armor. Rogues, rangers, DEX fighters, bards, Hexblade warlocks, and DEX paladins all wear armor. It sounds like your complaint is that the paladin should be awesome at everything with no tradeoffs. If what you want is to be badass with a Greatsword and...

D&D General Things That Bug You

Make a DEX-based paladin and fight with rapiers or short swords. The Paladin is an extremely strong class, so the fact that you can't build it to have high STR, DEX, CON, and CHA is not really a problem IMO.

D&D 5E (2014) Advice needed: is it ok to kill a player’s character if he is not there!

Sneaky Steve staggers into the tavern and crumples to the floor. "Rumors of my death have been...mildly...exaggerated," he gasps before passing out. In the end, it's just a game. If you make a mistake, it's okay to fix it with a joke and a wink.

D&D General Things That Bug You

Can't crit on damage that's saved against, and it's much harder to gain advantage or impose disadvantage on saves. So at least in 5e, the mechanical difference isn't trivial.

Pathfinder 2E Is It Time for PF2 "Essentials"?

Thanks, guys. I have to admit that my own opinion changed over this thread. I was fairly firmly in "the Paizo is doomed" camp, not because I didn't like the PF2e system, but because I didn't see how they could succeed. While Paizo's choices and their consequences have largely played out as I...
