D&D General where did the gods come from?

Licensed god factories, imagined into being by an obscure entity said to be from another cosmos. Each god or goddess must be made according to exacting specifications, assigned a unique purpose, and stamped with an individual serial number. Failure to comply may result in revocation of DMing...

D&D General Do you like LOTS of races/ancestries/whatever? If so, why?

Yeah, but I guess that makes it more of a "can't be arsed to completely kill each other off"; which I suppose is still a form of coexistence :p

D&D General Do you like LOTS of races/ancestries/whatever? If so, why?

Because it's fun? Because there are typically spaces of time while the DM is looking things up or setting stuff up, and roleplaying banter between party members is more entertaining than toying with dice or messing around on one's phone? I mean if the DM isn't into it and the rest of the...

D&D General Do you like LOTS of races/ancestries/whatever? If so, why?

They do...except..... Lions will readily steal kills from cheetahs. And occasionally kill and eat cheetahs (or their cubs), although they favor other prey. Orca consider shark livers to be yummy treats. And sharks run the bleep away from orcas. Sharks are not apex predators, at least where...

D&D General Handling the Orc Horde as a key setting element

Or possibly: Spiritual Corruption As every honest orc knows, civilization corrupts. It turns strong, free people into slaves. Weakens the body. Tempts the mind to want things it should not. Draws would-be megalomaniacal tyrants of the cities to delve into profane and world-breaking magic...

D&D General Do you like LOTS of races/ancestries/whatever? If so, why?

I generally think options are better than not having options? I don't really need dozens of races for most game settings. But I have no issues with bloodlines, subraces, etc. It IS a little annoying / verisimilitude-breaking when all of the PCs are exotic, obscure, alien creatures in a land...

D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part XIV: Wizard)

Ugh. No. By the FR Weave model, by the passage from the PHB spellcasting section I literally just quoted at you it is NOT direct manipulation. Just like a cleric doesn't directly manipulate raw magic. The divine power of the deity or whatever they pray to does that.

D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part XIV: Wizard)

Nope. Under the FR Weave model (at least as presented by the PHB), the raw magic inherent to the universe cannot be directly manipulated, even by a Wizard. They manipulate the essence of a sentient entity, Mystra, instead. The major difference between "The Weave" model and using the demon is...

D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part XIV: Wizard)

The conceptual problem I think you are having here is that the Weave is NOT actually the definitive way in which magic works in 5e. It's just a Forgotten Realms conceit; one specific way of visualizing magecraft. The ONE place it is mentioned in the core rulebooks explicitly calls this out...

D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part XIV: Wizard)

The Weave comes from the Forgotten Realms. And predates 5e. But it's entirely possible to have something like the Weave in a game world. Yet still have a "Hex spell" really be the signal used to get a tiny servitor demon, that your patron commanded to obey you, to pop into this reality for a...

D&D 5E (2014) Companion thread to 5E Survivor - Subclasses (Part XIV: Wizard)

I feel quite strongly that the reverse should be true tbh. It bothers the everliving !@#@$ out of me that BOTH warlocks and clerics are not explicitly expected to be following will of their patron or divine force, respectively. Or at least that there isn't more narrative room for the Patron to...

D&D General Handling the Orc Horde as a key setting element

How about: Species in Flux Orcs are the specially bred / created footsoldiers of a fallen empire. They were designed specifically for war - strong, hardy, aggressive; possessing high birth and maturation rates to replace those fallen in battle. They never had to support themselves - Imperial...

D&D General Things That Might Be True

The cat in the chest might be alive but might also be dead initially. Unfortunately, once you smash open the chest, the cat will ALWAYS be dead. This makes the party druid go all prickly. So distract the druid before smashing the chest. Oh wait, this thread is about something else....

D&D 5E (2014) What Wizard subclasses do you play?

More than three. Just not any at the moment, though will be playing War Wizard in an upcoming game? Eager to try out Diviner and Abjurer for more than a one-shot. Illusionist, Diviner, Conjurer prolly my favorites so far.
