D&D 5E (2014) What is your favorite part of playing D&D?

I'm sure this has been done a bazillion times, but...as the title says. If you had to pick, say, up to three?

D&D General give me your ideas for plant people.

Podlings - grown from a "mother" plant that comes into contact with the flesh of humanoids; whereupon a sprout forms and grows into fully fledged plant-based creature that looks identical to the humanoid whose flesh spawned it. When fully developed, they feel an intense drive to kill and...

D&D General Help me make a snake-themed dungeon

Some sort of homebrew giant serpent, serpent swarms, possibly cockatrices. Or even (stretching things a bit) a chimera or dragon. Not entirely sure what you mean by your last question? You can vary encounters based on what purpose they serve in the dungeon. Maybe the Yuan-ti keep some...

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a general theory of party construction?

My theory usually goes along the lines of: 1) Find a bunch of gullible idiots willing to convince themselves that heinous acts are necessary for "the greater good"; keeping in mind that the "greater good" might include such things as personal wealth or power, depending on the subject in...

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

PSA: Spamming the thread with endless repetitions of this same, tired old "argument" isn't persuasive, isn't moving discussion forward, and isn't earning you any respect.

D&D General When Things Go Awry, Who's At Fault?

I believe that anyone has the power to derail a game if they work hard enough.

D&D General Quaint and curious monsters of forgotten core

CR 4-8 undead that do something legitimately frightening and long-lasting to PCs? (Beyond ghosts, anyway)

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

Excuse me a second, guys. Feeding my lizard picks.

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

I would definitely allow the animal companion to grant the +5 to passive perception. Makes both mechanical and thematic sense. However, if the opposing stealth check fell within the extra +5 range, I might be inclined to tell the player something like "Your wolf starts growling, you notice...

D&D General What Happens if a Cleric/Warlock/etc PC Gravely Offends Their Supernatural Patron?

You know, now that I think about it, the last character I had come close to falling was actually an evil cleric of a blood-deity. Her "transgression" was failing to sacrifice to it. She started having nightmares about something being hungry. The next step would have been for her powers to...

D&D General What Happens if a Cleric/Warlock/etc PC Gravely Offends Their Supernatural Patron?

Depends on the class, nature of the god / patron, and nature of transgression. USUALLY it's lose powers until amends have been made. But new gods or patrons may be found to replace old ones. Usually a difficult task or sacrifice is required in the latter case to prove devotion, though often...

    D&D 5E (2014) Orcs and Drow in YOUR game (poll */comments +)

Both drow and orcs are usually Evil in my games. And players need a good excuse (backstory) to play one that isn't. But I don't actually have a problem with Evil characters as long as the players agree to get along. Orcs tend to be a little more Chaotic than Evil.

TSR I think we’ve finally made it!

We'll add this to the heap of facepalms sitting over there, shall we?

D&D General Make Your Dwarves More Interesting

Dwarves in one of my games had been "humanized" by disturbing, deific forces from a bear-like ancestor. Although retaining many of the classic dwarven characteristics they still had functional digging claws, bad tempers, and a penchant for hibernation.

AD&D 1E What are examples of "gotchya" encounters from Gary Gygax?

I had great fun in a one-shot with an evil drow bard against it. Primary strategy was using "Conjure Animals" and bamboozling NPCs to trigger all the traps. Game dissolved before we finished, unfortunately.

D&D General "Poison", and spells that change it: Spirit of the rules v letter?

There's a word for misusing language in this way, in fact. It's called "Equivocation".

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

That's kind of the root of the issue. The basic ruleset is designed to be independent of social context. Social context is something the DM or adventure/game world authors put in. And I've personally always interpreted the rules about building a castle and attracting retainers at level X to...

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

Mayor is as close to it gets to leadership in the shire, short of being the Thain - the military leader in the shire. It is more power than either Bilbo or Frodo ever held; the latter of which the blogger nevertheless refers to as a "gentleman".

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

He misses quite a lot of things. For example: Here, he seems to be confusing the base ruleset, which is designed to fit multiple possible game worlds, or generalized adventures (also designed to be adapted to multiple worlds) with a specific setting. Greyhawk, for example, has the Great...
