New Combat Action: Cling (Updated, v 1.1)

Forked from: Brutal Fencer (A Fighter Build) How would you like to ride the Tarrasque? While discussing a grab & stab fighting style, I remembered a delightful comic from DM of the Rings. Link here: Twenty Sided » Blog Archive » DM of the Rings CXXII:Xtreme Moves What if there were some...

    Warlord vs. Str. Cleric

Well, as only one of two melee characters, the other of which being a Rogue, I can tell you that my place is hardly by the sidelines. I'm needed for flanking a lot, plus a lot of my powers require some sort of proximity between me and either the Rogue or the enemy we're trying to take down. Your...

Whats the point of a ranged basic attack?

To clarify, any character can use a ranged basic attack at any time. They just need an appropriate weapon, of which bows are one.

    Brutal Fencer (A Fighter Build)

Yeah, I think the awkward word here is "fencer", not "brutal". Perhaps "Brutal Grappler" or something with "Vice Grip", "Chokehold", or "Eviscerator"?

    Player Character as an enemy

Hmm... Sounds like a very useful tool, especially since I'm planning on making a ton of homebrewed monsters for my own campaign. Link?

Initiative card tray..do you use one?

I wish we'd start using something like this. When we were first starting to play, my Warlord had Furious Smash. Unfortunately, I had so much else to think about that I could never quite get my delayed actions right to have my turn be just before the Rogue. If it were, I could set up flanking and...

    Brutal Fencer (A Fighter Build)

As a quick caveat, I don't know why they didn't provide better small-character rules. I understand they wanted them to be able to use one-handed weapons without the weapon shrinkage gimp of 3.5, but from there things really get complicated.

    Brutal Fencer (A Fighter Build)

Another question that didn't at first occur to me: Did you mean to leave Small characters out of this build? I doubt this was the intent, and I'm sure we can all appreciate the image of a battle-crazed halfling clinging on for dear life while gutting opponents. I get the feeling you can modify...

    Player Character as an enemy

I don't know if this is where you're coming from, but you should keep in mind that building an NPC using PC rules will not have the same effect in 4e as in 3e. I've heard horror stories of DMs making the transition who failed to fully research the implications of this. We're definitely out of...

    Forsaken

I'm really curious about making the Cannibalize mechanic work. I played a Forsaken in WoW for a while (though it's been quite some time now), and I recall it not working in combat. Perhaps it should modify out-of-combat or directly-after-combat healing when a creature is freshly killed. Whatever...

Having trouble finding low level encounters

Check the back of the MM, starting on page 284. There's a chart of monsters divided by level, then by role. Is this what you're looking for?

    Regarding skills

8 Int is below average, where average is 10. It's not 6 or 4 or 2. Actually, it translates almost perfectly to IQ scores, where 8 would be an 80. It doesn't translate past 20, but whatever. You may be dull, but not exactly drooling. If you prefer to define that as "dumb" then go for it, but I...

Myconians -New Format, New Paragon Path!

I took my first glance at your pdf today, and I must say I'm quite impressed. One thing I noticed, though: Concerning language, should Myconians have their own, exclusive language? Keep in mind that 4E languages are much more broad, e.g., orcs speak giant now. Might there be a more appropriate...

Can a warlord "heal" an unconscious character

Come to think of it, I was having the hardest time accepting the Illusionist Wizard's spells until this thread. If you consider hps more abstractly, the fact that Illusionists do psychic damage makes perfect sense. The target isn't taking physical wounds; why should there be any hp deduction...

    Brutal Fencer (A Fighter Build)

Sorry, that was worded poorly. I mean, did you intend the bonus to AC & Reflex while holding a versatile weapon to be untyped? For example, even the two-weapon defense feat is a shield bonus. I don't see immediately where this could be a problem, but if, for example, a set of bracers would give...

    Brutal Fencer (A Fighter Build)

I like it! It encourages a new kind of Fighter stickiness through grabbing; essentially, the Defender role is focued on single enemies at a time. Did you mean to leave out the Shield Bonus to AC/Reflex? I can't think of any off the top of my head, but there might be other sources of Shield...

    Sustaining a power provokes OAs?

Yes, basic ranged attacks are powers. Yes, they provoke OAs. But they are not the items under question here. The issue becomes complex when additional lines appear, as is the case for Flaming Sphere. In fact, "attacking" isn't even the question here, since a Wizard doen't actually attack with a...

    Gelatinous Cube Pills and Swarms!

*Bump for more feedback* Also: habaal, I LOVE the Rubik's Cube idea! It's fun and easy to manage in a game. Are there any other cube-based puzzles out there that could fit into a similar theme?

    Gelatinous Cube Pills and Swarms!

Yeah, I had actually considered this. For example, if they grab the center-square target for 3 turns in a row, they become a level 12 full-grown GC (gotta make a stat block for that, too) and automatically engulf and daze any target they were grabbing within the swarm aura. Any suggestions for...
