D&D 5E (2014) Class Mechanics Idea: The Warlord

The Morale paragraph seems crammed in there. It should really be listed as a separate class feature. Inspirations don't seem to fit into the Tactics mold as you've presented. Can you explain the benefit or reasoning behind combining the two? Also, I'll second the Charisma suggestion. Morale...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Mechanics Idea: The Warlord

I don't get the naming problems either. The concept is someone who leads well, and leads from the battlefield. This includes a barbarian warchief (like Ghengis Khan), a king leading the charge of his army (like Israel's David), and everything in between. From gangs to national armies. Rogue is a...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Mechanics Idea: The Warlord

Quick show of hands: Who has both played a Warlord (or been in a group with one) across the 4e level tiers and also thinks they can be incorporated into a specialty rather than a whole class? I ask because I have a sneaking suspicion that the number of people who answer yes to both of those...

Something that has to be modeled in this game and currently is not

I speak for the system as it is written and presented as well. Once again, 081312_How to Play.pdf, page 13, "Hit Points" paragraphs under the "Damage and Dying" header, especially the second paragraphs.

Something that has to be modeled in this game and currently is not

I guess that's your narrative choice, but not all blows have to be narrated as fatal ones that are somehow not fatal. I don't particularly feel like repeating myself, so I'll just say that I stand by my reasoning earlier in this thread.

Something that has to be modeled in this game and currently is not

What about modeling some types of damage in hit dice instead of standard HP? In 4e I would propose base surge value (without modifiers), basically .25x HP. Or increments of 0.5x HP (again, 4e, bloodied value). At this stage of danger, you risk losing half your max HP. At this stage, you risk...

Something that has to be modeled in this game and currently is not

I definitely get where you're coming from. To illustrate my own encounter with this problem, I ran a game where the PCs met a bodyguard in a hospital who had survived a vicious attack on his client. The Paladin in the group assumed that Lay on Hands would go a long way to cure him, and at that...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Mechanics Idea: The Warlord

I don't know if this helps, but here's something I wrote in a WotC thread: There are certainly different leadership components and styles, and I think there can be mechanics built into the Warlord to reflect this. The big three I'm thinking of are Strategy, Tactics, and Morale. Strategy is...

    The Cleric's Channel Divinity

A comment that's sort-of tangential to the topic: I'm all for simplified healing, but I really hope they don't bring back the Cure Light Wounds wand trick. I think over-reliance on magical healing is a narrative trap. There's a great couple of paragraphs on page 13 of the 8/13/12 "How to...

    The Cleric's Channel Divinity

Am I missing something? Some of the points people are bringing up are addressed within the second playtest packet. Is there a third? For example, Channel Divinity is already a heal-plus-attack for the War domain. And the Sun domain turns it into a burst damage effect. That's just the level 2...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Huh... I just realized what we're discussing here is a variation of dice pools, like Shadowrun's Combat Pool. Anyway, I don't quite buy the argument that allowing other classes Maneuvers and Expertise Dice makes the Fighter no longer unique. Look at Wizards. Right now, all they can do is cast...

    D&D 5E (2014) I didn't see it coming (semi-serious speculation of what's next in Next)

I'm guessing they will focus on material that has appeared in the PHB before. Maybe, like the Sorcerer and Warlock, they will focus on one more "classic" class and one "newer" class. I would also guess that they will ride the coat tails of the Fighter's Combat Superiority debut by focusing on at...

    The Tragedy of Flat Math

Not to derail the thread into the supposed power of orcs, but I'll point out that barbarian hordes have ravaged kingdoms within our own history when they manage to get powerful and organized enough. I don't see why the same can't be true for orcs, should they be an epic-level threat within a...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

First, please explain what you mean by parry being "the single ability currently usable with expertise dice." Second, I agree with your analysis of 3.X fighters and multiclassing. However, I either don't quite understand your argument about ED needing to be fighter-exclusive, or I don't agree...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Li Shenron, Would it feel appropriately unique if a Fighter were the only class whose ED regenerated every round? Don't get me wrong, I'm with you 100% that a Fighter needs a unique schtick. I was very glad in 4e when I saw they weren't as bland as I thought the 3e Fighter was. But to say that...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

My quick two cents... For the Warlord, perhaps their ED could be split between any combination of the pools of Strategy (gained before battle), Tactics (gained during battle), and Morale (a Daily resource). I have to say, at first I was against the ED concept spreading to other classes, but...

    Playtest Rogue adaptions

Actually, the Thieves' Cant is the only feature I see that 1) Applies to the class as a whole, and 2) References being a thief. Perhaps it's a feature that should be moved to Scheme, and either each scheme receives their own secret language, or only some share it. No reason the two options...

    Warlock: Eldritch Blast

To get more to the point, there are a number of reasons to "spam" an attack. One is that it's overpowered, the other is that all alternatives are underpowered. Or they ran out of options, with only 2 favors. Sound judgement requires more than the study of one variable.

We need to stop short changing thieves on equipment

Considering the game has been around so long, they already have a plethora of ideas for mundane equipment like this. I think it would be fantastic to add this right in the PHB, and to add a rogue scheme (as mentioned earlier, a "gadgeteer" or the like) that gets bonuses with such equipment...

Alternatives to Human Ability Score Boosts

Agreed. I think what bothers me right now is that the ability score bonuses, while numerically neat, don't actually do much within a class. I may end up with +1 to attack over my non-human companion, but when it comes to actually being a fighter, I'm not that much better off that a dwarf or elf...
