Divine Power
Solar Enemy
The divine sunlight playing across your enemies is a sign of the radiance to come.
Encounter Divine
Minor Action Close burst 2
Channel Divinity: You can use only one channel divinity power per encounter
Target: Each enemy in the burst
Effect: Each target...
Radiant mafia:
Lots o' characters with the Solar Enemy feat (minor action, burst 2, enemies gain vulnerable 5 radiant until end of next turn). Everyone attacks with radiant powers (easy to do with divine characters). Rinse, repeat for each character that has the feat. Best if you can delay or...
4th normal form? Weak. If there's anything but the key, the whole key, and nothing but the key in a stat line then WotC has fired me as a customer. 6NF rules definitions is the only true D&D for me.
Yeah, dude, daily power to get combat advantage against one opponent? No big deal. Hell, I'd let him have a duelist's longsword if he wanted.
Your player is clearly not trying to power game/twink his character, so I'd definitely let it slide.
I'm right there with you. Later D&D 4e books were better (Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporeum is really good), but still not in the class of AD&D books for sheer "pull it off the shelf and give it a read" fun.
The flip side is that a great deal of the fun in reading AD&D books came at the...
I’ve never played Burning Wheel, but I’m going to try to translate what I think “Let it Ride” and “Make it Interesting” mean into D&D with a familiar scene:
The Fellowship is trying to cross the Misty Mountains at the pass of Caradhras.
The party has on their side several hearty adventurers...
We're going to supplement our Saturday night game with Friday night playtests a couple of times a month. If it's good stuff we might do more. Most everyone is interested and somewhat excited, but no one has the anticipation level I have. I'm a snivelling WotC loyalist that will buy pretty much...
Build your own sammich:
1. Choose your meat(s) and/or cheese(s): class
2. Choose your bread: background
3. Choose your special sauce: theme
4. Add trimmings: feats, skills not included in class, background, theme?
Go!
I almost always go with some variation of the "you already know each other" routine.
Something I have used sporadically and to varying effect is the "Group Template" as suggested by the folks over at Fear the Boot:
this episode talks about group template
Here's the template.
This bit I like, other parts not so much.
My solution to the "one random encounter per day of travel" problem was to just not allow extended rests in hostile territory unless they spent a significant effort securing shelter. By doing this we have a week (or whatever) of travel that amounts to a...
I played and DM'd 3.x from release until 4e came out.
We ran many, many games. Very few got past 12th level or so, and most didn't make it past 5th level or so.
I can remember exactly one game that got to 16th level and it totally ended anyone's willingness to run high level D&D. In that game...
I have three house rules in my current D&D game. We're 18 game sessions into the campaign, 7th level, and it's going well.
My house rules:
Gain any single "expertise" feat of choice at 5th level free
Gain any single "improved defense" feat of choice at 7th level free
The party may cast two...
My current 4e game started at level 1. We play ~weekly for 4 - 6 hours per session. We just completed session session 18. The party hit level 7 after session 16.
5 hours/session * 16 sessions / 6 levels gained = ~13.3 hours/level gained which seems about right to me. That's enough time to play...
Of course that's a silly argument. The Enterprise would CRUSH a Star Destroyer.

Doh! I just saw your edit. So, no "run, double move, slowed" = run 8 squares, eh?
OK, so everyone is in the room for five turns and maybe some get dominated. Is that an interesting encounter?
Interesting idea. Quick thoughs off the top of my head:
I'm not a big fan of traps as encounters, but I've never tried it, so maybe it's better than I think.
What are your goals here? Do you want to actually challenge the party with a "level appropriate" challenge (draining surges, daily...
