What's giving up a familiar worth?

Due to both of these things, I rule that a familiar is worth a feat. And, as I note below, Obtain Familiar is actually *better* than the class ability, meaning the class ability is arguably not even worth a single feat. I would even allow the "have a decent familiar workaround": at 1st level...

Does Exceptional Deflection count against Magic Missiles?

No. Period. And you can't deflect fireballs, either. And if you ask again I'll rip your !@#$% character sheet up. -- Grumpy DM Spikey

    Sword vs Door: Ineffectual Weapon?

Well, look at the abilities of each. The barbarian is more impressive than 12 soldiers if he has a few levels on him. :) Attacking objects is an add-on rule that the designers probably spent like 2 hours thinking about, and another two hours writing. At least there are some rules this...

    Radiance from PHBII. Awesomeness.

Joker, that was a thing of beauty. :D

6 Epic Spells Per Day at Level 21?

Ah! Very good point, really. I think I'd definitely rule that you only get 2 + 2. Should be enough for any 21st level character, anyway. :)

How many spells are in the PHB?

Huh. Interesting. I was only counting spells like detect chaos/evil/good/law/funky once, instead of four times each, but I'm still at 600. Either I'm missing 5 or they're including 5 that aren't in the PHB. I'll have to figure out which it is. :)

    Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all of you silly people who actually logged on to ENWorld today! And, yes, I include myself in the group of silly people. :)

Santa brought me [THIS] Cool Gaming Stuff!

Santa (me) got on the Fantasy Flight Games $5 sale at the end of November and got a Call of Cthulhu adventure, Dragonstar Guide to the Galaxy, all three Dawnforge books, Blue Planet Player's Guide, and Fireborn Player's Guide for a total of $45. Me is happy. :)

How many spells are in the PHB?

I'm working on a little project where I'm trying to make a single big spell list, using all the PHB spells. I just finished the spreadsheet page and I've got 588 lines. I think I've got all the spells (including lesser confusion, which isn't on the bard list, at least in my first printing 3.5...

6 Epic Spells Per Day at Level 21?

Incorrect! Read the "Special" section. You get the benefit every time you meet the prerequisites. There are three sets of prereqs. The sample character meets them all. This is NOT an arbitrary thing; this is the very core of the question at hand. This thread would not be as long as it is...

Why do skill points only come in even numbers?

It's been a while since I calculated it out -- and my harddrive is a disastrous mess -- but that sounds about right. The average save isn't arbitrary, but it is not an obvious progression. Of all the answers I've heard, "It sounded good at the time" sounds the most logical to me. :)

6 Epic Spells Per Day at Level 21?

The way the feat is worded, you meet the prereqs three times and thus should get all three sets, thus giving you 6 epic spells per day. Granted, their intent was most likely that the 3rd set of prereqs was strictly for druids. But that's not what they *wrote*. Sometimes, I think WotC writes...

Why do skill points only come in even numbers?

Well, I suppose, but adding in the odd numbers wouldn't *really* make things more complex...

Why do skill points only come in even numbers?

No, this isn't in the Rules forum, because there's no possible rules basis for this question. This is purely about the psychology of game designers. Every WotC class (base or prestige) and every third party class I've ever seen has an even number of skill points per level -- 2, 4, 6, or 8...

    47,220. What is that?

It's one of the few things that has kept me subscribing. Well, that, and inertia. :) Most of my problems with the magazines, though, are *not* their fault. It's WotC's fault, with their miniature wargame, collectable more-wahoo-than-the-last hardcover emphasis for the game. It makes D&D...

How big is the Blood War?

The blood war is the silliest farking thing to come out of Planescape. Oh, wait, sorry, the silliest thing was the slang that they stole from Shadowrun. (Yes, I know the individual words were all different. But the sum total of the feel of them was exactly the same, making Sigil feel like a...

Which spell-like ability did you ask Santa for this year?

Took all the way to post #6 to get mine: shapechange. I'm surprised! If I had to go low level, Aganazzar's scorcher would be a good one. IRL, no one has fire resistance. :] Or if I wanted to be more practical, I'd stay in the same sort of arena with alter self or 3.0 polymorph.

How do you come up with names?

For place names, I use historical atlases. I am usually stealing a culture, so why not steal the place names? Most of the names have changed over time and, if you pick smaller places, you can easily get names that no one other than a scholar of the culture has ever heard of. :)

Is Ptolus living up to the hype?

Heh. Way too late for that. I live in Denver. It's going to be an adventuring getting to stores half a mile away, much less the only decent game store that's 10 miles away. But it's on my list, which it wasn't before. I'm a huge Monte fan, but even a 100 bucks for this book is a lot!

Is Ptolus living up to the hype?

Thanks for the thread necromancy, Canadienne! I've been out of d20 for a while, so it's interesting to hear some actual data on Ptolus. I must say that this thread (snarkiness and infighting aside) has actually sparked my interest in the book, which I hadn't thought possible. I had...
