This is true. I am rarely impressed with character minis.
Also, from the OP, I disagree with the Drider. I held one last night and the spider part was cool but the drow half was terrible. It made me want to break it off and just use it as a giant spider.
I can respect the well thought out analysis and worries from the OP. This may end up being one of those hindsight subjects that the next crop of game designers try to fix in 5 or 6 years, and of course the gamers will agree.
Well I'll be...I didn't know that, but I had a feeling someone would know where feats came from so I threw it out there. Now knowing this I see absolutely no reason to be coy in saying that 4E will be partly inspired by video games as well.
Very true, I think what is at stake here is being the lead in innovation. People say D&D inspires this and that game, now the tables seem to be turned. IMO what was great about 3e's design was the introduction of feats. What will be the feat of 4e?
Amazing comments from Mearls. It's not good that they need more justification for their design plans. This one is reassuring but still troubles me as to what is next. So far I'm still leaning away from 4E but there is plenty of time for them to make this work.
If it's drow I don't understand the trouble of going into all this 'mystery'. People have been playing (emulating) drow characters for years. I think tiefling would've made a much more mysterious and surprising if not controversial pick.
Minotaurs, heh.
Orcs and etc. trouble me because up till now AFAIK in all the core books none of the playable races have been typical NPC villain races. I like the idea of Orc heroes as well, but does this diminish their value for the DM to use as villains?
Whats going on in the D&D demographic has to have some parallel with the demographic reasons behind movie remakes. I'm too tired to think of how right now, but there it is.
I couldn't agree more. What they seem to be going with seems more like a 'buffet pantheon'. I'm sure it'll be laughable when put up against their old vanilla GH pantheon. If all they need is placeholder names why not make them all completely new gods?
