Having the knights as a separate class seems like needless work when a subclass of paladin and their oaths would work so much better or a fighter sub. If you introduce another class it needs to be different enough from the current classes and that adds the additional worry of not being balanced...

Basically our speculation was correct. Sucks. I can only draw from this that 5e didn't do nearly as well as we thought. I'd love to hear evidence to the contrary though.
