D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I got into D&D during the 1E era, and enjoyed it immensely, but... yeah, this. 1E was the third iteration of the game, and it wasn't very coherent. My initial and biggest disappointment with 2E was that it wasn't a 'cleaned up and coherent' version of 1E. But you always gotta remember that 1E...

D&D General Tell us about yourself

I grew up in a tiny MT town, and didn't discover D&D until I went to college in a bigger (but still rather small) town. All of my gaming years were in 1E and 2E years, and pretty much ended around 1990. My previous job kept me moving around a lot, so I found it impossible to get back into...

    AD&D 1E Non-Japanese Elements of 1e Oriental Adventures

yeah, I was always pretty sure the driving force behind OA was "you know, samurai and ninjas are pretty neat... let's make rules for them!"

D&D General Quaint and curious monsters of forgotten core

did the doombat from the 1E FF ever appear anywhere after that? I always liked this monstrous powerful bat that could bite, whip you with it's tail, and emit a godawful sonic shriek. Plus, it was big enough to be ridden. I put doombats in quite a few places in my campaign worlds....

D&D General What version of the Basic D&D/BECMI starter set did you first own?

yeah, that was my first one too, got it in 1980. The chits were so annoying that (literally) the next day, I went out and bought a set of dice, and consigned the chits to the trash can. The box eventually disintegrated, the B2 module ended up disappearing, but I still have the rulebook...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do cities in Faerun have fortified walls?

wouldn't the walls also be useful on a day to day basis for things like security (the guards see who is entering) and taxes (merchant caravans, etc.)? Restricting access to several gates seems like it would be a lot easier to keep track of such things. Again, it wouldn't help with powerful...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do cities in Faerun have fortified walls?

yeah, this. Sure, the walls won't help much when you get that 'once in 500 years' dragon attack. But they work fine for those 'every other year massive hordes of orcs/whatever' attacks...

D&D General D&D made the 2022 Doorway to Demonic Possession list!

my first thoughts on reading that was something along the lines of spying on people with cameras or something. Which isn't nice, but hardly a biggie on the path to demonic possession...

D&D General First official D&D game product you owned?

along with the actual MCs, there were MC pages scattered amongst several products... The Horde had a few, not sure about the other 2E boxed sets...

D&D General First official D&D game product you owned?

ironically, with the march of modern technology, you could do that now. All of the loose leaf MC books are available from DTRPG (I think), and if you really wanted to, you could download them all, print them all out to one monster per page (some would be two sided, most wouldn't, depending on...

AD&D 2E Wizards of the Coast releases pay-for-download PDFs of Battlesystem Skirmishes (AD&D 2E) and the Cardmaster Adventure Design Deck (AD&D 2E)

I played Skirmishes only once, at one of the Gencons I attended. There were several groups all out to loot a supposedly dead wizard's tower in search of some great magical McGuffin. I don't recall just what all the 6 groups were, do remember one of them was a necromancer with a bunch of...

D&D General What rule do you hate most from any edition? (+ Thread)

several people say they hate this rule, but I tell ya, there was nothing to put the fear of Gawd (i.e., the DM) into players like encountering a level drainer...

Did anyone else run high level campaigns in 2e ?

I had two characters reach somewhat high levels in 1E... a mage who made it to 16th, and a ranger who made it to 15th... none of the rest came anywhere near that...

D&D General War Mounts for the Different Fantasy Races/Monsters

I always wondered if a human size creature could actually ride a giant lizard.... lizards have a problem in that their legs splay out to the sides, and you'd be putting a lot of weight on that less than ideal setup. Dinosaurs, OTOH, have/had leg designs not so different from mammals, and riding...

D&D General War Mounts for the Different Fantasy Races/Monsters

I'm reminded of some fantasy novel I read way back in my teen years, where the good guys were facing off against a barbarian horde that rode giant spiders.... can't remember the title, it's been a long time...

TSR Why I still love the Real TSR

sadly, yes. For me, D&D was a 10 year thing, roughly 1980 (when I discovered it in college) to 1990 (when my job at the time started moving me around from town to town and I fell out of my last gaming group), spanning a big chunk of the 1E years and a couple of 2E. It was a wild and fun ride...
